The new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, quickly jumps into the action. Premiering on Disney+ on April 6th, the show immediately establishes a classic Star Wars plot device: a prison break. The story begins with Maul orchestrating a conflict between crime bosses Nico Deemis and Looti Vario on the planet Janix. His plan works when Vario kills Deemis, and Maul then orders his team to go after Vario. However, their pursuit is interrupted when Vario is rescued and arrested by Detective Brander Lawson.
Instead of allowing Vario to serve his time in peace, Maul and his group attacked the police station and kidnapped him. During the raid, Maul detected the presence of Devon Izara, a Twi’lek Padawan held in a nearby cell, and also took her prisoner, believing she could become his apprentice.

The opening scene was visually stunning and set the stage for an exciting show. This episode continues a trend in Disney+ Star Wars series: impressive prison escapes, particularly involving key characters being arrested and then freed, either by themselves or with help. These escapes have often been a highlight of the shows.
Disney+’s Most Impressive Star Wars Prison Breaks
Omega and the Bad Batch Break Out on Kamino

One of the most memorable moments on Disney+’s The Bad Batch was a thrilling prison escape. When the team returned to Kamino with Omega, they were captured and imprisoned. However, Omega, despite being a young child, cleverly managed to free herself and the rest of the squad. This escape was a key moment, establishing Omega as a vital character in the series. The show continued to feature similar escape sequences throughout its run, which proved to be a popular theme with Star Wars fans.
Omega and Crosshair Escape Mount Tantiss

While Season 1 featured a thrilling escape from prison, the most emotionally impactful one in The Bad Batch happens in Season 3. Omega, held captive at Dr. Hemlock’s secret facility on Wayland, unexpectedly frees Crosshair while Emperor Palpatine is visiting. With the facility on lockdown and all ships grounded except the Emperor’s, they manage to escape through the dangerous lurca hound cages and an exterior tunnel, eventually finding a wrecked shuttle in the jungle.
The group escapes in a stolen vehicle, joined by a lurca hound that Omega had rescued earlier. They dramatically return just in time to save her. Adding to the tension, Crosshair’s hands shake due to the experiments Hemlock performed on him.
The Bad Batch Breaks Rampart Out of Prison

This mission presented a difficult challenge: the clones had to save someone they truly hated. With Omega back in captivity and the location of Mount Tantiss a mystery, Crosshair hesitantly shares information. He believes Vice Admiral Rampart—the man responsible for the destruction of Kamino—may know where it is. Rampart is currently imprisoned in an Imperial work camp on Erebus, forced to work after being blamed for the events on Kamino.
With the help of their ally, Phee Genoa, the Bad Batch infiltrates an Imperial camp and steals a turbo tank to rescue a prisoner. In return for his freedom, the prisoner, Rampart, agrees to help them. After escaping, he reveals the location of an Imperial station near Coruscant – a necessary stop for all ships heading to Tantiss – providing the Batch with a way to move forward with their mission.
Mount Tantiss Prison Breakout

Once Clone Force 99 takes control of Rampart, they head to Mount Tantiss to rescue Omega. They discover she’s being held captive along with other children by Dr. Hemlock. However, Omega isn’t waiting to be rescued – she’s already planning and leading an escape, sharing her knowledge of breaking out of prisons with the other kids, and ultimately manages to get free.
Clone Force 99 faces a dangerous mission to save Omega. During a fierce battle with Hemlock’s special Clone X troopers, Hunter, Wrecker, and Crosshair are captured by Hemlock. At the same time, Echo teams up with Emerie Karr and a recently freed Omega to liberate other prisoners inside the facility. Together, they plan a rescue operation to free the rest of the Batch from Hemlock’s control.
Cassian Andor Leads the Narkina 5 Uprising

Many fans consider the prison storyline in the first season of Andor to be one of the best parts of all of Star Wars. In it, Cassian Andor is falsely arrested and sent to the Narkina 5 prison, where he learns the inmates are controlled with electrified floors and are never allowed to leave.
He starts planning an escape with Kino Loy, the floor manager responsible for keeping the prison shift on schedule. When Cassian causes a flood by breaking a water pipe and cutting off the power to the electrified floors, thousands of prisoners revolt at the same time. Kino then uses the intercom to rally the entire facility and ignite a full-scale uprising.
Inmates desperately try to escape, climbing to the highest point of the facility and jumping into the ocean. A particularly heartbreaking moment occurs when Kino Loy, portrayed by Andy Serkis, is left behind as he can’t swim. This escape profoundly changed Cassian, solidifying his dedication to fighting against the Empire.
Din Djarin Rescues Qin from a New Republic Prison Ship

I remember being totally hooked during episode 6 of The Mandalorian‘s first season, “The Prisoner.” It felt like a mini-movie about a heist! Basically, Din Djarin gets a job from someone he used to work with, Ranzar Malk, and has to team up with a bunch of mercenaries. Their mission? Break a prisoner named Qin out of a New Republic transport ship, the Bothan-5. They battled through a lot of droids to get to Qin, but then they betrayed Din and locked him up in the cell instead!
I was on the edge of my seat watching him break free using that droid arm! Then, he systematically took down each of those mercenaries, and finally delivered Qin right into Malk’s hands – though he was clever enough to plant a tracking beacon on Qin first. It was awesome seeing X-wings swoop in and blow Malk’s station to pieces right after! Honestly, it was one of the most fun episodes of the whole season, a really satisfying story all on its own.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Rescues Leia from an Inquisitor Fortress

In the series Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia is taken captive and imprisoned in a fortress on the water planet Nur, run by the Inquisitors. Obi-Wan, with assistance, sneaks into the heavily guarded facility, navigating past Inquisitors and stormtroopers to find Leia, who is being tortured.
The story beautifully develops the most heartwarming connection from the show. We see an older, weary Obi-Wan, who has been in hiding for years, reluctantly return to action because of a child who is incredibly important – perhaps more than she realizes. The setting adds to the mystery: the fortress is a chilling, desolate place filled with long-preserved Jedi in life-support tanks.
Osha’s Prison Ship Break and Mae’s Escape from Sol

Similar to other Star Wars series, The Acolyte includes several prison escapes. The first episode shows Osha being taken to Coruscant on a prison ship run by droids when the other prisoners attempt a breakout. They pull the ship out of hyperspace and crash it into an asteroid field. Although Osha believes in the Jedi and doesn’t join the escape, she’s left behind when the other inmates flee in escape pods.
With help from her droid, Pip, she manages to survive a crash landing on the planet Carlac. Later, in the season finale, she escapes from being held captive by Sol. She cleverly uses Pip to stun the Jedi Master and then flees in an escape pod, heading towards Brendok – a journey that sets up the final showdown of the series.
Baylan Skoll Frees Morgan Elsbeth from a New Republic Ship

The new series Ahsoka starts off with a bang. Baylan Skoll, played by Ray Stevenson, and his student Shin Hati, stop a New Republic ship that’s taking Morgan Elsbeth to court. They use a fake Jedi signal to board the ship, fight their way through the crew, and free Elsbeth from her holding cell.
The episode ends by showing what the characters are really after: locating the banished Grand Admiral Thrawn. As they flee the destroyed cruiser, the scene clearly sets up the main problem the season will focus on.
Jod Na Nawood Helps the Kids Escape the Pirates on Borgo Prime

By the end of the second episode of Skeleton Crew, four children who are lost from the planet At Attin are captured by pirates and locked up on Borgo Prime. While imprisoned, they encounter a cloaked figure named Jod Na Nawood, portrayed by Jude Law, who uses the Force to free them. In the next episode, Jod helps the kids return to their ship and they manage to escape the pirate station, narrowly avoiding disaster as they jump to hyperspace – even with a fuel line still connected and a piece of the dock breaking off during their getaway.
By the end of the series, Jod is revealed as the main villain, but initially, he appears as a charming and helpful outsider, using limited Force powers to help the group survive.
