The Star Wars franchise may be preparing to weather another flop.
The story of Din Djarin and Grogu from The Mandalorian is heading to the big screen Memorial Day weekend 2026, continuing the adventures from the Disney+ series. This will be the first Star Wars movie in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, a film that many fans didn’t enjoy, and reports suggest Disney is concerned about a similar reception this time around.
Variety reports that the 36-second Super Bowl ad for The Mandalorian and Grogu, which showed the characters riding a Tauntaun-pulled wagon, didn’t create the buzz the marketing team expected. Many fans were disappointed because the trailer didn’t offer any new information about the upcoming story, and it seemed to simply copy the style of Budweiser’s commercials.
A recent trailer confirmed Martin Scorsese will appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu, but the film’s success is still uncertain. Variety notes that because the movie is based on a streaming series, it might only appeal to the biggest fans of Baby Yoda and may not draw a large audience in theaters.
A new Star Wars movie is coming next summer, and early signs suggest it might be a hit with fans. According to reports, Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy (who also directed parts of Deadpool & Wolverine), is more likely to please audiences than recent installments. People who have seen early footage have praised Ryan Gosling’s performance and believe Levy has brought back the fun and excitement that Star Wars is known for.
The new movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, will feature new characters and take place a few years after the events of the Skywalker Saga. Ryan Gosling is just one of many big-name actors involved. While fan disappointment with The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s recent theatrical release isn’t a good sign for Starfighter, the film still has the potential to be successful if it tells a compelling story.
Following the somewhat disappointing third season, The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the adventures of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice, Grogu – a member of the same species as Yoda. The Mandalorian originally launched Disney+’s expansion of the Star Wars universe in 2019, becoming the first of many live-action series to build upon the beloved franchise.
The 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story was the first Star Wars movie to fail financially, earning $393 million despite a production cost between $275 and $300 million. The Mandalorian and Grogu is reportedly being made with a more manageable budget of $166 million, which lowers the risk of significant losses. However, a Star Wars film can still underperform at the box office.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will release in theaters on May 22, 2026.
