Discover the Classic RPGs That Shaped the World of Avowed!
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a rush of excitement with the latest release from Obsidian Entertainment, Avowed. While I’m eager to dive into this new RPG, I know that life sometimes gets in the way and not everyone has the time to jump right in. If you find yourself in that situation, or if you simply want to appreciate the game even more, now could be the perfect moment to reflect on the significant RPGs that have shaped Obsidian Entertainment and their latest creation.
It is evident that the upcoming game, Avowed , draws inspiration from a diverse range of classic titles, including the exotic settings of yesteryear’s JRPGs, the grandeur of Bioware’s Western-style games, and the thought-provoking narratives of the gaming industry’s most intellectually stimulating titles. These influential classics certainly deserve recognition for their enduring impact.
7. Final Fantasy 10
Island Vibes
During the late ’90s, Square Enix (formerly known as Squaresoft) was on an extraordinary streak, launching both critically and commercially successful games one after another. In a very brief span of time, Square transformed their production from the charming polygonal chibi style seen in Final Fantasy 7 to the visually impressive Final Fantasy 10 within just a few short years.
As a gamer, I’ve always found myself drawn to the enchanting world of Final Fantasy X, despite its controversial reputation over time. From Titus’s iconic laugh that echoes through the game, to the captivating sport of Blitzball, it’s safe to say this title has left an indelible mark on me. Interestingly enough, the exotic island setting, inspired by the vibrant culture of Polynesia, seems to have cast a spell over the creators of Avowed. They too, are delving into a realm filled with pirates, swaying palm trees, and the vast, azure expanse of the ocean that stretches out endlessly beyond.
6. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
The Best of Bioware
Many found the “Mass Effect” series their initial foray into the realm of Role-Playing Games (RPGs), boasting an inviting atmosphere for newcomers yet providing depth that seasoned players could enjoy. The Legendary Edition compiles all three games, presenting a fantastic bargain in gaming, immersing players in a memorable world and featuring some of the most remarkable RPG companions ever depicted digitally.
In a simplified and conversational manner: Just like Mass Effect, it’s known for focusing heavily on its character companions in the story, a trait that has grown even more prominent over time. Avowed, on the other hand, takes this concept and expands upon it, drawing from the affection for companion characters common in Western RPGs and making it a significant aspect of gameplay within Avowed.
5. World of Warcraft
The MMORPG Grand-Daddy
As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that among the pantheon of legendary RPGs, none have held quite the same level of cultural impact, player base, or sway over the realm of fantasy as Blizzard’s esteemed MMORPG, World of Warcraft. This game has undeniably devoured countless hours of productivity from gamers worldwide, establishing itself as a cornerstone in the gaming community.
Significantly, World of Warcraft stood out by moving away from the grim and dark aesthetics that were increasingly prevalent in fantasy during the late 90s and early 2000s. Instead, it chose vibrant colors, action-packed scenes, and a unique art style heavily inspired by cartoons, much like Avowed does, creating a particularly vivid world.
4. Dragon Age: Origins
Modern Fantasy Frisson
As a dedicated fan, I’d have to agree that while the Mass Effect series undeniably holds a special place in Bioware’s portfolio, it’s the Dragon Age franchise that truly captivates hardcore RPG enthusiasts like me. The diverse and compelling cast of companions in each game is what really sets Dragon Age apart, even though each installment seems to stray increasingly from its original tabletop origins.
Dragon Age: Origins is cherished for its exceptional writing, a vividly crafted universe, and memorable characters who enliven the adventure. In establishing a contemporary fantasy world that feels authentic and shapes the narrative, Dragon Age: Origins laid the groundwork which Pillars of Eternity and subsequently Avowed would eventually emulate.
3. Morrowind
Weird Tamriel
Following Tolkien, many fantasy works often revolved around traditional creatures like elves, dwarves, orcs, and humans within a predominantly Medieval setting. While this is acceptable in essence, fantasy as a genre holds immense potential for exploration beyond these confines, waiting to be fully realized.
In a slightly different wording: Unlike other fantasy stories that delved into the peculiarities of their worlds, Morrowind might be the one most widely admired for its unique approach. It showcased bizarre architecture, menacing creatures, and customs that were completely foreign, giving a fresh, exciting twist to the RPG genre. In a similar vein, Avowed intends to embrace the alien elements of its world filled with peculiar fungi, drawing clear influence from Morrowind.
2. Planescape: Torment
The RPG as Philosophy
In the realm of timeless role-playing games (RPGs), few titles have earned as much respect as the unconquerable “Planescape: Torment”. This game is a heartfelt tribute to the Forgotten Realms universe and every outstanding RPG from the 20th century. Simultaneously, it dares to envision what role-playing games might evolve into during the 21st century.
The game is well-known for its exceptional narrative, deep philosophical themes, and an emotionally impactful story revolving around companions. There’s hardly a corner of the RPG genre untouched by the influence of Planescape: Torment, and Avowed is not immune to this.
1. Fallout: New Vegas
Modern RPG Masterpiece
Interestingly enough, it’s quite remarkable that Obsidian Entertainment’s most successful commercial and critically acclaimed game emerged from a spin-off series. This series, however, was hurriedly developed under immense pressure and in an unjustifiably short timeframe. Despite these challenging circumstances, Fallout: New Vegas is now celebrated as one of the greatest RPGs ever produced, and its design principles continue to resonate long after its initial release.
As much as Obsidian might resist it, there’s no denying that Fallout: New Vegas will cast a shadow over Avowed in some way. Whether it’s the immersive first-person viewpoint, the depth of character companions, the challenging rogue’s gallery of monsters, or the intricate world building, these elements are bound to leave their mark on Avowed. It’s a tall order for any game to match the greatness of Fallout: New Vegas, but that’s just how it goes.
