- Discord is rolling out teen-by-default settings globally starting early March 2026.
- Teens using the app will be extra safe as age-appropriate settings automatically.
Discord is launching a big update to help keep teenagers safe online. Starting in early March 2026, the platform will automatically apply safety settings designed for teens to all users, including those with existing accounts. These changes will be rolled out gradually.
Discord is now making the app safer for teenagers by automatically giving them an age-appropriate experience. Adults who confirm their age will still have full access to all of Discord’s features and settings.
Discord has privacy-focused age verification options with facial age checks and ID proofs
Discord is improving how it confirms users’ ages. You might be asked to verify your age if you try to join servers with age limits, view explicit content, or customize how you communicate with others.
You can confirm your age on Discord either by letting the app estimate it from a photo of your face, or by submitting a photo ID through one of Discord’s trusted partners. Discord also quietly tries to guess your age itself, so most people won’t need to verify manually unless specifically asked.
This update prioritizes your privacy. Age estimations are done right on your device, so no data is sent to our servers. Plus, any ID you submit to verify your age is automatically deleted after verification is complete. Other users won’t be able to see your age or if you’ve been verified.
Once the update is released, some new safety features will be automatically turned on. Images and videos that might be considered sensitive will be blurred for most users, but those who have confirmed they are adults will be able to view them. Also, certain servers and commands designed for mature audiences will only be accessible to adult users.
To help keep everyone safe, messages from people you don’t know will now go to a separate inbox. Only adults whose age has been verified will be able to change this setting. Also, only verified adults will be able to speak in Stage channels. You might recall that Discord previously tested an age verification system using face and ID scans in the UK and Australia last year.
Discord recently created a Teen Council, which is a great step forward. As a popular social platform, Discord is working hard to improve safety and the overall experience, particularly for teens, and it seems like they’re making real progress.
