Did You Miss Out On These Hidden Plotlines In Atomfall?

It’s often thought that Atomfall centers mainly on action and fighting. However, what truly draws players in is its intricate network of connected narratives and enigmas.

Delving into its intricately crafted Northern English portrayal of a post-nuclear scenario, you’ll uncover the mysterious inhabitants of the Quarantine Zone. Alongside the main storylines that guide your gameplay progression, there are numerous subtleties and hidden narratives that add depth to the environment. In Atomfall, which of these less apparent tales capture your attention the most?

The Village Murder

Whodunnit?

Given its status as the most densely populated region within the game, it’s to be expected that Wyndham Village boasts a high number of interconnected narratives. One such tale you may encounter fragments of, but won’t witness in its entirety, is the enigma surrounding Maisie’s murder.

The short tale on the side focuses on the idea that Reverend McHenry will assign you a mystery to solve: identifying Maisie’s murderer. You’ll find yourself confirming his intuition that Morris Wick, the village shopkeeper, is responsible for her death. What adds intrigue to this story is not just the revelation of the culprit but also the various motivations behind this crime and the diverse ways you can engage with the narrative.

Through a little investigative work, you’ll uncover that Morris murdered Maisie because she was spying on him at the behest of the Reverend. However, it is revealed later that the Reverend had valid concerns, as there exists a note where Morris admits to spying in the village with the aim of influencing the townsfolk to adopt the druid’s mentality. The course of action you take – either choosing to spare Morris or informing the Protocol or the Reverend about his actions – will significantly impact your alliances within your faction.

Prudence And Charity

The Mystery Of Datlow Hall

It’s uncommon to encounter friendly folks outside of Wyndham Village who are open to chatting, unless they have other intentions besides trading. So, it comes as quite a shock to see Prudence wandering the corridors of Datlow Hall, which is usually in a state of neglect. Her troubled demeanor is clear, and she keeps mentioning her secluded sister, Charity, and asking for her butler, Jenks.

After finding Jenks’ body at the nearby dam, a desperate plea for aid was found on him, addressed to Datlow Hall as Prudence is unable to care for herself and Charity is gravely ill. Upon returning to Prudence and relaying the sad news of her butler’s demise, she promptly employs you as his replacement and hands over the key to the conservatory.

Here, you’ll discover the long-buried remains of Charity alongside her final note to her sibling. In this letter, she reveals that she had begun hearing whispers from the earth just prior to her death.

Mother Jago’s True Intentions

A Hand From The Occult

In Wyndham Village, you might come across a character named Mother Jago, whose details you may gather from different conversations with various people. Initially, you can locate her near the northern part of Casterfell Woods. She appears to be a friendly woman, albeit somewhat peculiar, and she’s known for extending help to those in distress, such as the baker’s husband. However, she seems to maintain a cautious distance from the Protocol Soldiers.

As you decide to assist her more, you’ll uncover more about her connections, which initially appear to be just an expedited acquisition of her recipe book. However, this simple task unexpectedly evolves into a comprehensive immersion into their mindset reminiscent of a cult, and you may even start hearing the voices they claim come from the earth.

If you stick faithfully to Mother Jago and this faction’s path, you will have an option to nourish Oberon rather than demolishing it. This is the sole method of fully adhering to Jago’s guidelines, which ultimately results in your character perishing by merging with the earth, or leaping into a ravine.

June And Francis

Fancy A Cuppa?

At the onset of Atomfall, the protagonist finds himself in a world where the quarantine has been enforced for a long time. Inside the Quarantine Zone, society has developed its own history, albeit one marked by volatility. One fascinating aspect of this history is the subplot between June and Francis, which can be uncovered by deciphering hints and reading correspondence.

Previously, June, who used to run The Little Tea Room in Wyndham Village, found herself entangled with Francis, a technician who once collaborated with Dr. Garrow. Through her keen detective abilities, she discovered unsettling truths about the Interchange and Garrow’s research. Consequently, she was forced to end her budding romance with Francis and sent him a letter along with a ring, explaining that she needed to return to her old life in Wyndham and maintain ignorance of their findings.

Unfortunately, it came to light that June possessed certain knowledge, which led us to discover her skeleton within a sealed-off and deserted Tea Room. Moreover, it appears that the Protocol officers sworn to safeguard the village’s citizens were allegedly responsible for silencing her.

2.

Dr. Garrow And Dr. Holder

Best Frenemies

In the captivating world of Atomfall, there’s a limited number of characters I can engage with, and some of these familiar figures can be quite elusive. Among these, Dr. Holder and Dr. Garrow, once colleagues at the Interchange, researching Oberon together, stand out as particularly hard-to-find gems. These two scientists are hidden treasures!

In the course of the game, you can discover Dr. Holder’s secret lab, tucked away beneath Wyndham Village’s church by deciphering clues and locating the right key. As for Dr. Garrow, she can be found in the gloomy recesses of Skethermoor Prison. The path you choose throughout the game determines which scientist you side with, and each has a distinct ending based on whom you aid. A less conspicuous aspect is their shared past, which might slip past if not carefully observed.

There are recordings, letters, and distinct conversation paths that reveal Garrow is responsible for initiating the quarantine due to her rash commands to proceed with excavation at Oberon (disregarding Holder’s caution), a decision that nearly cost Holder his life in the ensuing explosion and left him confined by the quarantine. Meanwhile, Garrow herself remained unscathed on the outside.

It’s not surprising that if you assist Garrow by releasing her from prison and aid Holder by obtaining information at the Interchange, they both wind up in the Interchange control room. In this situation, driven by revenge, Holder may end up shooting Garrow on sight. While it’s understandable given the circumstances, it’s still unfortunate.

Agravaine And The Infiltrators

Under The Surface

In the less prominent subplots of Atomfall, there’s a puzzling narrative that unfolds, involving cryptic hints dropped by spies who were tasked with uncovering information about the experiments conducted on Oberon. Few signs lead to Ilya Kozlov, a mysterious figure attempting to connect with an unknown agent named Agravaine. Assisting him in restoring his radio might be your task, but due to his inability to establish contact, he’ll eventually attempt to flee alone, leaving the main character behind.

If you’re an avid adventurer, you’ll eventually come across his dead body in a cave contaminated with Oberon. Should you navigate the Interchange from Wyndham City, you’ll encounter Joyce Tanner, and a woman resembling Ilya (in a strikingly similar outfit) will assign you a mission: to unlock all the radio towers within the Quarantine Zone so she can aid you in escaping the zone.

Should you decide to embark on this side mission, it brings you closer to uncovering her conclusion. By progressing through the Infiltrators’ main quest and completing this task, you can eventually confront her about your theory that she is Agravaine. She will validate your suspicions. However, your triumphant revelation is short-lived as she immediately knocks you unconscious. Upon awakening, you learn that you have been freed from the Quarantine Zone, but beware, for the enigmatic organization she serves may subject you to severe interrogations.
