Did The Monsterverse Really Just Introduce A Second Version Of A Major Titan? It’s Complicated

The season finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters suggests there might be two Rodans in the Monsterverse. The final scene showed Kurt Russell’s character, Lee Shaw, seemingly in Thailand, spotting Rodan – a well-known monster from the Godzilla films and a major Titan in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

The ending of Godzilla: King of the Monsters left Rodan alive and submitting to Godzilla, hinting that he might return as an ally in future Monsterverse films. While fans hoped for a classic Godzilla and Rodan team-up like in the original Toho movies, the story didn’t allow for it. Despite this potential, Rodan wasn’t included in either Godzilla vs. Kong or Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

After a seven-year wait, the Monsterverse has reintroduced him in the series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Surprisingly, the groundwork for his return wasn’t laid in King of the Monsters – the events of the second season actually happen two years before the film.

I was totally shocked to see a Rodan before “King of the Monsters”! It didn’t really make sense, and honestly, it seemed like the established rules of the Monsterverse were being bent. That’s why a lot of fans, myself included, think they might have actually brought in another Rodan – a second one alongside the one we already know.

Rodan Appearing In 2017 Would Create Complications For The Monsterverse Timeline

As a big fan of the Monsterverse, I’ve been following all the details about Rodan’s origins, and things are really coming together! Apparently, back in 1991, the Monarch organization set up a base – Outpost 56 – right at the volcano in Mexico where Rodan was sleeping. They were keeping a close watch on this giant, pterodactyl-like creature, and now we’re starting to understand why!

It seems Rodan spent its whole life inside the volcano. As Dougherty explained, its parents placed the egg there. Rodan was likely asleep for thousands, or even millions, of years until the Orca device woke it up.

If Monarch: Legacy of Monsters truly reintroduced the original Rodan, everything we thought we knew about his history would be wrong. It would mean Rodan was active above ground before 2019, and wasn’t in the volcano scientists believed he was. To maintain the idea that there’s only been one Rodan, the show would need to reveal he was first observed in the Isla De Mara volcano in 1991, then moved to another location, and finally returned to Mexico before 2019.

How Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Can Explain Its Rodan Being The Same As The 2019 Version

It might seem like a stretch, but it’s possible to explain how Rodan could have traveled so far, even if it requires a bit of backstory adjustment. Considering Titans can travel globally using rifts and tunnels, Rodan could follow a migration route similar to Titan X in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. He could have potentially used a rift beneath the Isla De Mara volcano and then another to reach the volcano in Thailand.

To set up future Monsterverse stories, a third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters would need to keep Rodan alive and return him to Mexico. However, this could limit the show’s creative options. A more probable solution is for the series to establish that there are actually two Rodans, rather than trying to avoid complications with the existing timeline.

The Existence Of Two Rodans In The Monsterverse Wouldn’t Be Without Precedent

While it might seem unusual to have two Rodans existing at once, it’s actually happened before. Evidence from a mural in King of the Monsters clearly shows there were two Rodans in the past. The very first film featuring the monster also included a pair of Rodans, and this was a key part of the story. The 1956 movie famously ended with one Rodan dying, and its partner intentionally flying into lava to join it, choosing to die together rather than live apart.

As a big monster movie fan, the recent events in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters really got me thinking – it feels like a nod to Rodan. And honestly, Toho’s done similar things before, so it doesn’t feel like a huge departure from what we know about Godzilla’s world. It makes me wonder if we might actually see another Rodan appear! Right now, either explanation for that twist seems possible, and I’m excited to see where they go with it.

What The Backstory For A Possible Second Rodan Could Be

If Monarch: Legacy of Monsters continues down this path, it raises the question of how the show will explain the existence of two Rodans. A simple explanation could be that Rodan’s parents laid eggs in both Mexico and Thailand, meaning this Rodan would share a similar origin story with the one from King of the Monsters.

Alternatively, this second Rodan could be one of the original Rodan’s parents. Since Titans like Godzilla can live for thousands of years, it’s possible both of this Rodan’s parents are still alive – perhaps one is currently dormant in a volcano in Thailand.

A painting in Godzilla: King of the Monsters suggests that Rodan and Godzilla were once allies against King Ghidorah. The painting shows a Rodan fighting alongside Godzilla, and it’s possible this was an ancestor of the Rodan we see in the movie, or another Rodan from the same species. This ancient Rodan might be the one living in the volcano in Thailand, which could mean its relationship with Godzilla is different than what we saw in the 2019 film – a storyline the series could explore in the future.
