Did The MCU Just Confirm A Doctor Strange 2 Super-Team Is Real?

The new show Wonder Man might have just confirmed rumors of a team-up similar to what was teased in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A key part of the Wonder Man plot focuses on the Department of Damage Control – an organization Tony Stark created – and how they use Trevor Slattery to manipulate Simon Williams, ultimately setting up the show’s conclusion.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve noticed Wonder Man is packed with Easter eggs! They’re fun nods to the larger MCU, and especially to what’s happened with Trevor Slattery. Now, a lot of these are more ‘in-joke’ references – they don’t necessarily hint at what’s coming next in the universe. But some of them do connect to some of the biggest Marvel projects we’ve seen recently, which is pretty cool.

One project, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, subtly connects to Wonder Man through a reference to a team of superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Wonder Man References The Illuminati

The first episode of Wonder Man introduces Simon and Trevor’s initial encounter. Trevor intentionally makes a loud phone call in a movie theater to get Simon’s notice. Once Simon recognizes him, Trevor reluctantly explains his past as the Mandarin.

Trevor points out that a certain event happened over a decade ago and was simply a staged performance, even though people on Reddit have come up with various theories about it. He specifically mentions a theory claiming he’s secretly part of the Illuminati. Interestingly, the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured a version of the Illuminati, including characters like Professor X, Reed Richards, Captain Marvel, Black Bolt, Karl Mordo, and Captain Carter.

Wonder Man’s Tone Makes Trevor’s Illuminati Reference A Vague One

While this mention appears to point to an existing team within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the way Trevor says it is unclear. It leaves us wondering if he’s referring to the real-world Illuminati conspiracy theory, or the superhero team from Doctor Strange 2 that operates across different universes.

Considering Wonder Man focuses on a more realistic and down-to-earth corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it makes sense that the reference is to a less fantastical plot. The show appears to be primarily a deep dive into its characters, with the superhero elements taking a backseat. This suggests the conspiracy Trevor mentioned might be a more ordinary, real-world type, rather than something involving a team of superpowered individuals like mutants or Inhumans.

What’s great about Wonder Man is that viewers can interpret its connection to the wider MCU however they like. Given that the show exists in a world full of aliens, robots, and magic users who often battle superheroes, it’s perfectly reasonable to think Trevor might be hinting at the Illuminati when he mentions it.

If a viewer prefers to keep Wonder Man realistic like the show, they could interpret Trevor’s mention of the Illuminati as a familiar conspiracy theory.

Trevor May Have Confirmed The Illuminati Is Not Only A Multiversal Team

Considering everything, if Trevor was referring to the Illuminati team, he might have revealed they exist across multiple universes. So far, the Illuminati have only appeared in alternate universes, like the one seen in Doctor Strange 2 (Earth-838), not the main Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, if Trevor was discussing a team that exists within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, it suggests Wonder Man’s casual mention could be quite important for the future of the franchise. It could pave the way for a new team to share the spotlight alongside the Avengers.
