Did Bad Sisters season 2 really just do that!? (Episode 2 review)

Well, I’ve been a fan of dark comedies for quite some time now, having watched my fair share of shows that’ll make you laugh one minute and sob uncontrollably the next. And let me tell you, Bad Sisters season 2 is living up to its reputation! The second episode, “Penance,” took a sharp turn I didn’t see coming, but boy, did it leave an impact.

Wow, I must admit I was taken aback after watching “Bad Sisters” season 2 episode 2 titled “Penance”. The plot took a turn that none of us anticipated. Today, they released the first two episodes on Apple TV+, and from now on, a new episode will air each week. Alright, let’s delve into our review for this second episode. SPOILER ALERT.

Did Bad Sisters season 2 really just do that!? (Episode 2 review)

Initially, the first episode of the season was decent but seemed to begin somewhat lethargically. However, episode 2 kicks things off energetically. In the second episode of season 2, it was revealed that Roger is riddled with guilt over his role in concealing John Paul’s death alongside Grace. Instead of going to the police as intended, he chose to confess everything to his sister, Angelica. Unfortunately, this was a mistake.

Instead of Roger, it was for Grace that Angelica shared this information, expressing her knowledge in a way that left Roger feeling quite baffled. Oh dear me, I wonder what possessed Roger to do such a thing! Poor fellow. It’s apparent that the guilt is consuming him, yet he shouldn’t have confided in Angelica of all people! Grace requested some space, and I can’t help but feel it’s not too much to ask. Apparently, Angelica simply desires clarification and wants an explanation. In essence, she seems quite curious and intrusive, if you take my meaning. Apologies for the language used there.

In this episode, Angelica seemed to irritate me significantly. To add insult to injury, she continued to push Grace about the incident, making her explain herself repeatedly. However, it’s important to note that Grace appears to have emotional and mental instability, which is evident. Yet, this woman has endured a great deal and never sought therapy for her past traumas.

During the two-year time leap, it wasn’t indicated that Angelica was helping sincerely. Instead, it appears she’s pretending to assist, possibly driven by a desire to gather information and perhaps to demonstrate her superiority over Grace and her sisters. Why are you so fixated on this? Frankly, move along. It’s important.

The situation is worsening for Grace due to her sisters. They’re trying to assist, but their actions are causing suspicion that Grace might be connected to her husband Ian’s disappearance. Since she managed to conceal Roger’s role from them, they’ve become suspicious. They even take it upon themselves to clean up, which I find endearing. As for confronting Roger? That’s quite a laugh! These sisters are fiercely protective, though their approach in dealing with Grace could have been more tactful. Unfortunately, they’re adding to the tension that Grace is already experiencing under Angelica’s watchful eye, making the pressure on her even greater.

In an unexpected and jarring development that left me utterly stunned, it seems Grace may have met her end. The series has written her character out! Following heated arguments with her sisters and her daughter, Grace requests help from Eva, then gathers a large sum of money. Was she attempting to flee? What was the intention behind this act? Given her unstable mental state and dire circumstances, one can only speculate. In a heart-wrenching twist, when she bent down to search for an earring her daughter had given her, Grace lost control of the wheel and met with an accident. It appears that in a dramatic and tragic turn of events, Grace may no longer be with us. This certainly is a daring move in the plotline.

I must admit, I wasn’t anticipating this turn of events at all. It’s heartbreaking to know that the last conversation the sisters and Blanaid shared with Grace was strained. I can only imagine how devastated and guilty they will feel about it. It’s truly unfortunate that after all she endured, Grace managed to find happiness, only for it to be cut short so tragically. It’s a real pity.

I don’t know how to feel about this storyline. Like I said, Grace definitely deserved better after all the abuse she’d gone through. And I know real life is tragic at times and we don’t always get a happy ending. But that’s what television shows are for, right? The series definitely took a risk in doing this, and I hope it pays off later in the season. Even so, the episode was done really well and I could feel the pressure Grace was under.

In other places, it seems as if Angelica is self-inflicting pain or something, with the chain looped around her limb. Moreover, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the Claftin brothers. Their interactions were more captivating than those between Loftus and Houlihan. Regrettably, they still managed to grate on my nerves. Episode rating: B
