Released in 2019, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was the first live-action movie based on the popular video game franchise. It’s inspired by the 2016 video game of the same name, and Ryan Reynolds provides the voice and motion capture performance for Pikachu. When it came out, the film was a huge success, becoming the second-highest-grossing video game movie ever – a record now held by films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), A Minecraft Movie (2025), and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).
A sequel to Detective Pikachu is in the works, but we don’t have a release date yet. Following the first film’s big success, Pokémon fans are excited for news about the next installment and are already guessing about the plot, new characters, and which Pokémon might appear. Many believe this film would be a great opportunity to bring Team Rocket into the live-action Pokémon universe.
Team Rocket is an Essential Part of the Pokémon Franchise
Team Rocket is a recurring group of villains in the world of Pokémon. They first appeared in the original 1996 Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue video games, and in the anime series that began in 1997. While many villainous teams have challenged Pokémon trainers and caused trouble over the years, Team Rocket remains the most famous and widespread criminal organization in the franchise.
In Pokémon video games, Team Rocket is a major antagonistic force. They primarily focus on catching strong and rare Pokémon, which they then exploit for financial gain. This makes them a constant nuisance for Pokémon Trainers and a threat to Pokémon themselves. Team Rocket views Pokémon not as living beings deserving of kindness, but as objects to be captured, controlled, and sold.
Team Rocket first appeared in the original Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue games and have been the primary villains in several installments since then. They reappear in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal (1999), as well as Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (2017). Team Rocket also plays a significant role in the mobile game Pokémon GO (2016), where players encounter and battle members of the team, including leaders and even Giovanni.
The anime version of Team Rocket is a bit different from how they’re shown in the video games. They remain a dangerous and opposing force, but the anime focuses heavily on Jessie and James, who are often the first characters that come to mind when fans think of the group. They’re the most recognizable faces of Team Rocket.
Jessie and James are very different from Team Rocket as portrayed in the Pokémon games. While the trio constantly causes trouble for Ash Ketchum, they’re not usually seen as a real danger. Instead, Jessie, James, and Meowth mostly provide comic relief. They’re likable and fun, but they aren’t clever enough to outsmart even someone as naive as Ash, who remains remarkably immature throughout the series.
Team Rocket is famous in the anime for their silly, over-the-top plans that always fail. However, as fans learn more about Jessie and James, it becomes clear that some of their failures might be intentional. They often seem unhappy working for Giovanni and don’t really support his goals, leading them to frequently help the heroes instead. This relatable aspect of their characters is a big reason why the Team Rocket trio is so popular with Pokémon fans.
Detective Pikachu 2 is the Best Place to Reintroduce Jessie & James
Though many fans love the Team Rocket trio, Jessie, James, and Meowth are often seen as silly villains who wouldn’t work well in a more modern story. They’ve become so focused on being funny that they’re not really threatening, and even dedicated Team Rocket fans have trouble taking them seriously.
That statement is completely inaccurate. Team Rocket, as a team, are actually quite complex characters with their own unique sense of right and wrong. They also have a huge range of cool technology – mechas, vehicles, and gadgets – that help them do their jobs. The city in Detective Pikachu, Ryme City, is the ideal location to showcase this iconic trio, as it offers a setting where they can realistically operate as high-stakes industrial spies.
Everyone loves Team Rocket’s Jessie, James, and Meowth, and many fans wish they were taken more seriously. As the most recognizable faces of the villainous team, they have the potential to be real contenders. They can still be funny and have wild plans, but it would be great to see them genuinely challenge Ash and his friends.
The core conflict of the movie revolves around something called R-Gas, a strange purple gas that makes Pokémon become aggressive, even attacking people and other Pokémon. Because Pokémon live so closely with humans, R-Gas is a major danger to everyday life. This gas is created from the cells of Mewtwo, making it incredibly powerful and able to spread easily through the air.
The R-Gas plotline offers a great way to bring Team Rocket into a potential Detective Pikachu 2, especially considering what happened in the first movie. Since Team Rocket is always trying to catch Pikachu in the anime, it would fit perfectly if they appeared as clever agents tasked with capturing Detective Pikachu himself. Over the years, Jessie, James, and Meowth have already been shown using advanced technology and vehicles – like their Gyarados submarine – so turning them into stylish, film-noir-style spies sneaking into Ryme City after the events of the first film feels like a natural fit.
The setting of Ryme City and the general feel of Detective Pikachu offer opportunities to reimagine Team Rocket. Their strong bond as a makeshift family and their determination to achieve their goals, even when things get tough, are what make the trio compelling, and those qualities could work well in this new environment. Instead of playing up the clumsy, comedic aspects, a Detective Pikachu 2 could portray Jessie, James, and Meowth as more grounded and believable characters, while still preserving what makes them recognizable.
Beyond that, Team Rocket offers a strong contrast to the beliefs of Tim Goodman and Pikachu. Ryme City sees Pokémon as equals, with Pikachu even working as a detective. Team Rocket, however, has always seen Pokémon as a means to gain wealth and control, and their presence in Ryme City could really shake things up. Following their failed plot with R-Gas, they might even be able to convince the people of Ryme City to distrust Pokémon.
Moving Team Rocket to a city like Ryme City would allow for a more mature and believable take on Jessie, James, and Meowth. While Team Rocket generally views Pokémon as tools, this trio clearly has a different outlook. With Pokémon like Meowth, Koffing, Ekans, and Wobbuffet by their side, they might actually fit in and even question the ethics of their actions in a place like Ryme City.
