The journey back to Arrakis is going to look quite different this time around.
Warner Bros. recently released the first trailer for Dune: Part Three, and held a discussion with director Denis Villeneuve and other guests, led by moderator Reece Feldman. The film, set 17 years after the events of the second movie, is based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah. It will explore Paul Atreides’ time as Emperor, a period marked by a massive galactic war that leads to the deaths of billions.
Dune: Part 3 Is A Very Different Movie
Previously, Stilgar, played by Javier Bardem, led the Fremen away to battle the Great Houses, fighting in the name of Paul. Meanwhile, Zendaya’s Chani disappeared into the desert, heartbroken as Paul, known as Usul, transformed into the leader he had vowed to avoid becoming. Director Denis Villeneuve describes the new film as a significant departure from the first ones, noting it has a distinct tone, rhythm, and pace.
The first Dune film was thoughtful and focused on a boy discovering a new world, while the second was a large-scale war movie. This third installment, however, is a fast-paced, suspenseful thriller – much more intense and action-driven. The first trailer makes this clear. While the film references moments from the previous two movies, Dune: Part Three is heading in a new direction, depicting brutal battle scenes and strange, otherworldly locations where political games are as dangerous as any weapon.
Changes in Front Of and Behind the Camera
Villeneuve has confirmed the movie will take place at least 17 years after the previous installment, but both he and the trailer suggest we’ll learn what happened in the intervening years. The story will focus on Paul Atreides grappling with the burdens of his immense power and attempting to break the cycle of violence. As an emperor who can foresee the future, he’s essentially unstoppable, and that will be a key part of the narrative.
Just because Paul Atreides can foresee the future doesn’t mean his journey will be easy. Director Denis Villeneuve explains the next film will show people actively trying to take him down, creating a very tense story. The scale of the world itself is also changing, and this new direction for the series has led to some changes in how it’s made. Notably, Linus Sandgren is now the cinematographer, replacing Greig Fraser, who previously won an Academy Award for his work on the first film.
Things have really changed since then, especially on Arrakis. While it’s still a desert planet, the climate is different now. We’re filming in new locations and exploring parts of the planet you haven’t seen before. We’re also traveling to entirely new worlds.
I wanted a fresh perspective, so I collaborated with my friend, Linus Sandgren. We both agreed to shoot most of the film on traditional film, primarily using the 65mm format. We also shot a significant portion in IMAX film – a first for me. However, I chose to film the desert scenes digitally, as I preferred the stark, raw look that digital IMAX provided. Ultimately, we envisioned this as a truly immersive IMAX experience, best enjoyed on the largest screen possible – that was our goal.
Paul and Chani are Still the Heart of this Story
Even with all the new developments, the core of the story remains a love story. Director Villeneuve explains that the relationship between Paul and Chani is still the emotional center of the film. He believes Dune: Part Three could be his most meaningful and personal project to date.
Paul and Chani face difficulties in their relationship, complicated by immense pressure from the world and Paul’s struggle to break free from a pattern of violence. I find the way their love develops to be deeply moving and relatable.
The director has confirmed Hans Zimmer will return to create the music for the new film, but promises a fresh sound. He says Zimmer is approaching the score with the same creative energy as the previous two films. While it will definitely feel like a Dune movie, it will also be unexpected and surprising, and that’s exactly what the director is aiming for with the story.
New Characters Like Alia and Scytale Will Bring New Challenges for Paul
Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Robert Pattinson, and Anya Taylor-Joy, along with the film’s director, presented the trailer and took questions from the audience. Pattinson and Taylor-Joy are new to the cast, playing the enigmatic villain Scytale and Paul’s sister, Alia. Alia will have a significantly expanded role in this installment, building on her brief appearance in a vision sequence in the previous film.

I’m really excited to see how Alia’s character has evolved! She’s clearly not the child we saw before; the new posters suggest she’s a force to be reckoned with. Anya Taylor-Joy described Alia as being in a really complex situation – almost like a blessing and a curse – and hinted it has to do with the Water of Life. Apparently, drinking that stuff has given Alia access to the memories and knowledge of countless generations. It’s like she’s constantly aware of everything that’s ever happened, which must make even a simple conversation incredibly layered.
Taylor-Joy explains that the actress is primarily driven by her deep love and loyalty to her brother. He’s the only person who’s ever truly understood her, even before she was born, and she’s incredibly devoted to him, sometimes to an extreme degree.
This involves safeguarding her from anyone who might try to undermine Paul’s rule as Emperor, including the enigmatic new character Scytale, portrayed by Pattinson. Pattinson describes the character as complex, explaining, “He’s unpredictable in the book – it’s hard to know where his loyalties lie, and that’s what makes him so compelling.”
Is he a villain? It’s complicated. He’s not really a typical bad guy – he could even be considered a good guy. It’s hard to say for sure, but the actor enjoys playing him a lot.
Even though Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, and Jason Momoa couldn’t attend in person, they still participated in the event. Chalamet shared a video promoting the movie and introducing director Denis Villeneuve. Pugh and Momoa joined the conversation by asking questions of their co-stars – Momoa specifically inquired about how his character, Duncan Idaho, makes a return. Villeneuve responded by praising the brilliance of the original author, Frank Herbert.
Pugh was curious about what would happen between their characters after the events of the film. In Part Two, Chani left Paul, and Pugh’s character, Princess Irulan, was promised to the new emperor. Zendaya didn’t reveal much when asked about it, remaining playfully evasive.
Before revealing the trailer, Villeneuve shared an update on the film’s progress, saying it’s coming along nicely. He explained that while most of the filming is complete and the movie is now in the editing phase, these large-scale films require extensive post-production work. He immediately added that he needed to return to the editing room.
