As a huge Dune fan, it’s been ages since we’ve gotten any real news about Dune: Part Three, but suddenly, in just a few hours, we’ve gotten two big updates! First the trailer dropped, and now Denis Villeneuve, who’s co-writing and directing, has given us a really exciting reveal.
The new science fiction movie is a continuation of the story started in 2024’s Dune: Part Two. It’s based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah and follows Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet) as the holy war he initiated continues to unfold.
The trailer for the third film revealed Robert Pattinson as the villain, Scytale, and now excitement is growing before the movie hits theaters in December. Director Villeneuve has recently shared a key plot detail.

So, I just watched the trailer and the director did a Q&A afterwards, and it blew my mind! Apparently, the story jumps ahead 17 years. Paul actually becomes the Padishah Emperor – you know, like, the ruler of everything – after he marries Princess Irulan, who Florence Pugh is playing. Pretty epic, right?
Villeneuve described the first film as thoughtful and exploratory, the second as a war story, and this latest installment as much more focused on action and suspense.
What to Read Next
Paul is struggling with the problems that come with immense power, and he’s searching for a way to break free from the endless violence surrounding him. Being an Emperor with the ability to foresee the future makes him incredibly difficult to defeat, but he still faces enemies who are plotting to take him down.
The filmmaker and several stars from the movie—including Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, and Anya Taylor-Joy—were in Los Angeles for the premiere of the trailer.
Rebecca Ferguson is also coming back for another installment, reprising her role as Lady Jessica, Paul’s mother. This is a bit unexpected, as her character doesn’t have a large role in the original book.

Rebecca Ferguson told IndieWire in October that her role in the film is small, as her character, Lady Jessica, isn’t featured heavily in the source novel. She suggested director Denis Villeneuve may have specifically wanted to include her, even though it wasn’t necessarily required by the story. She also praised the script, noting how challenging it is to adapt such a complex book into a movie.
There’s a lot to share about Denis. He’s involved on and off, and he’s really trying to stay connected to the book and contribute. Everything he works on is amazing, in my opinion.
Dune: Part Three is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 18 December.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant 100-page tribute to Harry Styles, is now available! You can find it at newsstands or purchase it online.
