Demi Lovato, 32, reveals the 'involuntary experience' she has in common with other former child stars like Drew Barrymore, 49

As I reflect upon Demi Lovato’s insightful words, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of empathy and admiration for her life experience. Age, after all, is just a number that we humans seem to fixate on, often forgetting to savor the present moment – something that Demi rightly encourages us to do.

Demi Lovato shares a similar background with celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson, Raven-Symoné, and JoJo Siwa – they all rose to fame during their childhood years.

The actress, known for her early appearances on the children’s show “Barney & Friends,” admitted experiencing ‘dissociation’ as a result of becoming famous.

32-year-old Lovato shared her thoughts during an appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday while discussing her upcoming directorial project, titled “Child Star”.

It is a documentary about growing up in the entertainment industry.

As an ardent admirer, let me share my captivating observation from our collective odyssey: A shared thread that caught my attention was discovering numerous individuals among us employed the same resilience tactic – dissociation. This coping skill, as it turned out, seemed to be a remarkable reaction to the trauma of encountering fame at a tender age, a fact she disclosed with intrigue.

Dissociation refers to a psychological phenomenon where an individual may experience detachment from their own thoughts, emotions, experiences, or even self-perception. This detachment can vary in intensity, from being only slightly noticeable to quite severe. In some cases, it might be a typical reaction to high levels of stress or traumatic events, as described by WebMD.

It is also labeled an ‘involuntary experience.’

She went on to say, “There were only fragments of time, moments, and tasks that I can’t recall working on, and that was truly intriguing to me,” she remarked while showcasing a stylish gray Loewe outfit.

It seems I underestimated the degree of influence that fame has on a person’s mental state, including their brain chemistry.

Lovato, who is an award-winning singer, said ‘curiosity’ made her want to do the project.

For several years, she had pondered about the reasons behind people joining the industry so early and its impact on us.

She was interested in exploring the romantic relationships of child actors, starting from as far back as Shirley Temple and Jackie Coogan.

Lovato also told young people ‘it’s OK to take breaks.’

When asked about upcoming plans, she replied, “I’m not sure what my future holds,” adding that this specific project was particularly meaningful and a “perfect match” for her. She expressed her desire to continue working on projects like this in the future.

Under the joint direction of Lovato and Nicola Marsh, ‘Child Star’ – a documentary Lovato also produced – is now available for streaming on Hulu. The production was carried out in collaboration with Michael D. Ratner, Scott Ratner, Miranda Sherman, and Kfir Goldberg from OBB Pictures.

Disney is the parent company of Hulu, ABC News, and Good Morning America.

Earlier, she admitted she gets a feeling of ‘existential dread’ about aging.

The artist, who recently reverted to using she/her pronouns after using they/them for a year, celebrated her 32nd birthday this past month. She mentioned that although she isn’t concerned about aging, she does experience some apprehension regarding the aging process.

This comes just hours after her film Child Star was released on Hulu. In it she makes her directorial debut and tells stories close to her heart after rising to fame on Barney and Friends and Camp Rock.

On Tuesday, she expressed to People magazine that contemplating aging often triggers feelings of anxiety within her, not due to concerns over physical appearance or bodily changes, but rather due to an underlying sense of existential unease.

‘I like to stay in the present moment. When we think about things that are in our past or things that are in our future, we’re not present, and presence is the biggest gift that we can give ourselves.’

As I look forward to the coming year, a person from New Mexico admitted that people often desire things they cannot possess, which essentially translates to us putting undue stress on ourselves due to feeling older than our former selves.

She noted that ‘one day’ in the hopefully very distant future, people will regret wasting time ‘worrying about age’ with the world at their feet.

She expressed: “At the ages of 80 or 90, you may reflect and think, ‘Why did I spend my youth fretting over my age, when I had a wealth of possibilities ahead and plenty of time to spare?’

Instead of dwelling on the remaining time, I prefer to consider the additional life experiences we might be fortunate enough to gain.

She also opened up about her new documentary, Child Star.

She explained: ‘This was just a story that I had been wanting to tell for quite some time.

I’ve often pondered delving into the historical aspect of child celebrities, considering various viewpoints, and gaining insights about what it means to be a modern-day child star.

You can stream the documentary on Hulu, which features private conversations with Demi and popular actors like Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson, Christina Ricci, Raven-Symoné, JoJo Siwa, and Alyson Stoner.

As stated in a recent press announcement, Child Star delves into the ups and downs of maturing under the public eye, focusing on the experiences of some of the globe’s renowned ex-child celebrities.

This movie dismantles the phases of past fame using celebrity interviews, real-life scenes, and historical clips, offering insights into the entertainment industry over the past hundred years.

Demi is teaming up with author Nicola Marsh for a joint directorial role, working alongside OBB Pictures, SB Films, and DLG on the movie’s production.

Alongside Michael D. Ratner, Scott Ratner, Miranda Sherman, and Kfir Goldberg, the former Disney Channel star was also involved in production.

The show “Child Star” was overseen in an executive capacity by Nicola B. Marsh, along with Scooter Braun, Scott Manson, Jen MeDaniels, and James Shin. Additionally, Glenn Stickley played a significant role as co-executive producer.
