Death in Paradise just tried something really new – here’s what it means for the rest of the series

You don’t usually think of murder mysteries and kids going together. That might be why the new Death in Paradise spin-off, Beyond Paradise, works so well – there’s plenty of crime, but fewer actual murders compared to the original show.

Until recently, the island of Saint Marie hadn’t seen many children. Aside from small parts – like those in the Christmas special’s school nativity play – kids were rarely featured in island life.

The most recent episode of Death in Paradise left viewers with a surprising twist: the arrival of DI Mervin’s (Don Gilet) niece, Eloise (Avah Cotterell). While unexpected, the surprise was nothing compared to Mervin’s own, as he originally came to the island searching for his mother and now seems to be discovering an entire family he didn’t know about.

Eloise has a relaxed and charming personality, just like her somewhat unreliable father, Solomon (Daniel Ward), and she arrives when he’s needed most. Their budding relationship faced a major setback last week when Solomon’s risky plan went wrong and led to his arrest, with no clear end in sight.

The storyline, which had been promising for the emotionally distant detective, ended abruptly and was a letdown. His rigid personality was being challenged by his difficult relationship with Solomon, leading to compelling character development. However, his brother’s imprisonment cut that growth short.

James Hall, a writer for Death in Paradise, is introducing a new challenge for the character Mervin with Eloise, a surprisingly bold and gambling-inclined young girl. Despite appearing for less than two minutes, actress Cotterell has already captivated audiences.

What to Read Next

With a few playful shrugs, eye rolls, and gestures, Eloise quickly charmed Mervin. She asked, “Should I call you Merv, Uncle Mervin, or just Merv?” and then confidently walked into his house, immediately asking about breakfast. Mervin, a stickler for rules, was already on edge, and he quickly told her not to touch anything.

The finale preview showed Eloise determined to help clear her father’s name. She tells her uncle, Detective Merv, “We need a plan to find proof he didn’t do it.”

This shows she’s decided to call him ‘Uncle Merv’ – which is perfect, really – and that she plans on staying for a while, which is wonderful news.

Cotterell is a fantastic addition to the show, and we’re eager to see more of her work. More importantly, her character, Eloise, brings a fresh and compelling layer to Mervin’s story and the series as a whole.

Mervin has generally been managing things on Saint Marie, even though Solomon has led them down paths he’d prefer to avoid – like getting hot sauce in your eyes! Still, when he wanted to stop, he could.

Eloise is now challenging Mervin’s patience, but in a new way. However, with a sense of duty and responsibility involved, how will he react when he can’t just avoid the situation?

The events surrounding Eloise are pushing the detective to change, and this will likely make his character more complex and engaging. Although Solomon’s departure was unexpected, this new development is a smart way to continue investigating Mervin’s family history and the connections within that family.

Adding a child to the show introduces a completely new dynamic. Mervin now faces the challenge of handling risky investigations while also protecting a curious and meddling kid who’s likely to stir up trouble. This creates exciting new story possibilities and allows for deeper, more emotionally complex moments.

We’re hoping she stays with the show beyond the initial two episodes, because it would be a real shame if she didn’t get the chance to do more.
