David Attenborough’s “remarkable” new Netflix series picks up 50 years after iconic ’70s encounter

A new David Attenborough documentary, praised as hopeful and joyful, is set to premiere on Netflix. Called A Gorilla Story and directed by James Reed, the film features Attenborough returning to footage from his 1978 series Life on Earth, where he originally met a young mountain gorilla named Pablo.

In this new documentary, Sir David Attenborough revisits the story of Pablo, a famous gorilla, and shows how his family continues to thrive in the mountains of Rwanda – a group affectionately called the ‘Pablo Group’.

This touching documentary combines the story of David Attenborough’s initial meeting with a baby gorilla named Pablo with an update on how Pablo’s family is faring in the mountains of Rwanda today.

Featuring both recent and historical footage of gorillas, and narrated by David Attenborough – with insights from his 1978 journals – A Gorilla Story showcases remarkable and previously unseen gorilla behavior.

Directed by Academy Award winner James Reed (known for My Octopus Teacher) and produced by experienced nature filmmaker Alastair Fothergill (of Life on Our Planet) and Silverback Films, A Gorilla Story is an uplifting and heartwarming film.

It will be co-directed by Callum Webster alongside assistant director Amy Thompson.

Along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Favisson, and Phillip Watson from Appian Way, Alastair Fothergill served as an executive producer on A Gorilla Story.

Before the documentary comes out, producer Alistair Fothergill, who is also executive director at Silverback Films, told BBC Wildlife Magazine that his work with David Attenborough has spanned his entire career. He highlighted Attenborough’s famous encounter with Pablo the gorilla in his first series, Life on Earth, saying it fundamentally changed how people viewed gorillas.

I was so excited to hear that for this new project, the team actually got incredible access to the families of the gorillas they originally studied in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. What really blew me away was that they spent over 250 days with them! That’s a huge commitment and must have given them some amazing insights.

A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough will be released on Netflix on 17 April.
