Dark Winds Season 4 Finale, Explained

In Season 4 of Dark Winds, the Navajo Tribal Police found themselves investigating a case that took them to Los Angeles, where they faced several dangerous situations. Throughout the season, Joe has been relentlessly pursued by a hitwoman named Irene Vaggan while trying to locate a missing teenager, Billie. At the same time, Chee is struggling with a psychological affliction known as Ghost Sickness, brought on by unresolved grief over his mother’s death, and Bern is starting to understand the challenges of being a leader like Joe.

The season finale pits Joe against Vaggan in a final confrontation, forcing him to get dangerously close to understand her vulnerabilities. True to form for this show, defeating one enemy only creates a bigger problem. Joe inadvertently makes a powerful new enemy, and it ultimately leads to his downfall.

Vaggan Takes Joe and Billie Captive

Following his kidnapping by Vaggan in the last episode, Joe finds himself held captive with Billie in an underground bunker. Vaggan’s method of torment is unique compared to previous villains on Dark Winds; he traps his victims in a fabricated reality. It’s already clear Billie’s Indigenous background plays a role, but the finale reveals Vaggan’s cruelty stems from a lifelong obsession with Native Americans.

During a private and awkward conversation with Joe, she showed him books from her childhood in Nazi Germany. She fondly remembered a fictional Native American chief who was a strong advocate for his people and their beliefs. However, this fondness masked a deeper issue: while she became fixated on Native Americans, it stemmed from her frustration at not being able to defend her own country during World War II against the Americans and their allies.

Vaggan envisions Joe and Billie as her perfect “family” and tries to create that reality by cooking traditional Navajo food and participating in their spiritual practices. Throughout this, she subtly criticizes Joe’s ex-wife, Emma. Initially, Joe and Billie resist, but Vaggan incapacitates them with a gas, rendering them unconscious.

Both Joe and Vaggan survive when Joe convinces her to allow him to perform a ritual to restore something to the Earth. An explosion severely burns half of Vaggan’s face. Though Joe is tempted to kill her, he’s reminded of why Emma left him – taking a life had previously destroyed him and his family. He decides to spare Vaggan and instead has her arrested.

Chee Cleans Himself of His Ghost Sickness

With the connection between Billie and Leroy Gorman and the imprisoned crime boss Dominic McNair finally explained, and Vaggan now in jail, the Navajo Tribal Police are turning their attention to what comes next. Following Emma’s advice, Chee participates in a traditional ceremony for guidance. The event is well-attended by members of the community, including Chee’s former FBI colleague, Toby Shaw.

Chee is maturing and seems to be finding his purpose. Joe hopes he and Emma can find the same, but Emma tells him she’s decided to live in Los Angeles and isn’t interested in rekindling their relationship. Despite this, Joe demonstrates significant personal growth. Rather than drastically changing his life to follow her – like retiring and moving – he chooses to stay with the Navajo Tribal Police.

How Dark Winds Sets Up Season 5

Joe’s moment of happiness is immediately ruined when he learns his friend, Sheriff Gordo Sena, has been killed. Gordo was a longtime source of support for Joe, helping him through both work and personal challenges. He had a minor role in Season 5, offering advice as Joe considered retirement and also caring for his sick wife.

Gordo’s death is a first for Dark Winds – it leaves the season on a huge cliffhanger that needs to be addressed. This happens right after Joe recklessly confronted McNair, essentially daring him to come to Navajo land. It’s possible McNair deliberately targeted someone close to Joe – a long-time friend who had nothing to do with their conflict – as a way to truly hurt him.

I’m so excited – they’ve already started filming the new season! It feels like ages since we last saw Joe, Bern, and Chee, and I’m really eager to find out what happened with Gordo. One thing I know for sure about this show is that Joe always makes sure justice is served – nobody gets away with anything on that reservation!

Dark Winds Season 4 is available to stream on AMC+. A fifth season is in development.
