Daredevil: Born Again’s Sudden Death Could Change MCU Forever

The latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again ended on a dramatic note with a surprising attack and the potential loss of a character. It’s unclear if anyone actually died, with cast and crew offering different explanations. Whatever happens next, this event is likely to have a significant and lasting impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly how superheroes function in New York City.

The recent Daredevil episode, “Gloves Off,” revolved around a charity boxing match planned as a trap for Bullseye, who was targeting Kingpin and his wife. Though the trap was set, Bullseye still attacked, but Daredevil managed to interrupt him. Unfortunately, during the chaos, Vanessa Fisk was hit by glass fragments from a trophy Wilson Fisk had actually deflected while trying to protect her, leaving her wounded in the neck and temple.

Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Kingpin, and Sana Amanat, an executive producer, have offered different hints about whether Vanessa will live. Despite this uncertainty, most viewers believe such a shocking event would likely result in her death, especially considering Vanessa’s significant role in the comics and her impact on Kingpin’s character.

How Vanessa Fisk died in the Daredevil comics

I always found Vanessa Fisk a really interesting character. When she first appeared in the Spider-Man comics, she seemed genuinely unaware of just how deep her husband, Wilson Fisk, was into crime. She actually tried to steer him towards a normal life, and for a while, it looked like the Kingpin might actually change. Sadly, he just couldn’t shake his old habits and ended up back down that path.

After a failed kidnapping, Vanessa was rescued by Daredevil but subsequently fell into a catatonic state. Once she recovered, she sought revenge against her husband, the Kingpin, and Daredevil, blaming them for the violence that had destroyed her life. Sadly, she later died from an illness unrelated to these events, in Amazing Spider-Man #19, published in 2016.

How Daredevil: Born Again quietly alters the MCU

The new Daredevil series on Disney+ significantly changed Vanessa Fisk’s character, portraying her as actively involved in Kingpin’s crimes. Despite these changes, one thing from the original comics remains consistent: Wilson Fisk deeply loves his wife and would do anything to protect her. When Vanessa is threatened, it completely removes his self-control.

In the comics, Kingpin frequently flew into a rage when he believed his wife, Vanessa, was harmed, killed, or unfaithful. The recent Daredevil: Born Again series hinted at this side of him, showing his reaction to Vanessa’s affair and his anxiety when she unexpectedly appeared during his plan to capture Bullseye. Currently, Kingpin is trying to control Manhattan by eliminating vigilantes, which has caused problems for heroes like White Tiger and the Swordsman. However, if Kingpin were driven by personal rage, he would become an even greater threat.

It’s not yet clear how Fisk’s new laws against vigilantes connect to the Sokovia Accords in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The New Avengers, based in Manhattan, might be protected from these laws since they work as federal agents, not unauthorized heroes. This detail probably won’t be explored in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ movie. However, Fisk’s policies, combined with his dislike of costumed heroes, could create problems for independent heroes like Doctor Strange and Ms. Marvel.
