Daniel Radcliffe, known for playing Harry Potter, recently shared that he, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were once approached about starring in a new version of The Wizard of Oz. The proposed remake would have been a very different take on the classic story.
We’ve been seeing a lot of movie remakes lately, but Hollywood has actually been revisiting old stories for quite a while now.
For every successful movie like Ocean’s Eleven and Casino Royale, there’s a less fortunate remake, such as those of Psycho, The Wicker Man, and Planet of the Apes that critics didn’t like.

Sometime in the 2000s, someone in Hollywood tried to make a new movie based on L. Frank Baum’s classic book, even though a very popular film version was already made in 1939.
While eating spicy chicken wings on the show Hot Ones, Daniel Radcliffe shared a story about a strange movie pitch he once received.

I once heard a terrible idea during the Harry Potter films. Someone suggested we – Emma, Rupert, and I – star in a remake of The Wizard of Oz. They wanted Emma to play Dorothy, though I can’t recall what role they had in mind for Rupert.
I recall wanting to play the Lion, but the other actor knew karate. So, I ended up playing a Lion who was a bit of a coward, but also knew karate!
I recall being around 14 or 15 years old and thinking, even then, that this was a poor concept and shouldn’t be created.

Hollywood has explored the backstory of Oz twice—actually, three times if you count both parts of Wicked—with the films Oz the Great and Powerful and the Wicked adaptations.
Meanwhile, Potter itself is getting a remake, although that’s coming to TV rather than cinemas.
Hot Ones is available to stream on the First We Feast channel on YouTube.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a beautiful, full-colour 100-page magazine celebrating Taylor Swift, is now available! You can find it at newsagents or order it online for only £8.99.
