Dacre Montgomery: 2017’s ‘Power Rangers’ Was Planned as a Four-Film Franchise

The Power Rangers franchise began in 1993 with the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a show about five teenagers chosen to battle villains from other worlds. Since then, it’s grown into a huge series of movies and TV shows, recently concluding with Power Rangers Cosmic Fury on Netflix in 2023.

The story of the Power Rangers became increasingly complex over the years. In March 2017, Lionsgate attempted to streamline it with a reboot film, also titled Power Rangers, featuring a new cast. Dacre Montgomery, who would soon become known for his role as Billy Hargrove in Stranger Things, played Jason Scott, the Red Ranger. The film also starred Bryan Cranston as the voice and guiding force of Zordon, Bill Hader as his robotic helper Alpha 5, and Elizabeth Banks as the villain Rita Repulsa.

In an interview with MovieWeb, Jason David Montgomery shared that the 2017 Power Rangers movie was intended to launch a full series of films. He explained that Lionsgate had a four-movie deal planned, hoping to build a franchise with Power Rangers similar to The Hunger Games, which had recently concluded its initial run based on Suzanne Collins’ books with Mockingjay – Part 2.

It had the potential to be huge, but unfortunately, it didn’t make enough money for the studio to justify continuing with it. I’ve heard they’re planning a reboot, though! It sounds like the rights to the franchise may have been sold, which is exciting. Power Rangers is really important to a lot of people, so I’m confident whoever takes it on next will do a fantastic job. I personally had a wonderful experience working on it.

The 2017 Power Rangers movie earned about $142 million worldwide, but with a production cost of $120 million, it didn’t perform well enough to warrant a sequel. As Montgomery pointed out, Saban sold the Power Rangers franchise to Hasbro in 2018, and a new reboot is currently in development.

‘Power Rangers’ Will Get Another New Lease on Life

In December 2025, MovieWeb reported that Dan Shotz and Jonathan E. Steinberg, the showrunners for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, were developing a new Power Rangers series for Disney+. When asked if the series would continue the existing 30-year storyline or be a fresh start, Shotz remained tight-lipped, playfully dodging the question. He simply stated they were hoping to bring the story to life, but couldn’t offer any further details at that time.

Rumors are already circulating about the show’s casting, with reports suggesting Disney is considering rising stars like Shaun Dixon (known from Vampirina: Teenage Vampire), Paris Bravo, Judd Goodstein (You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah), Momona Tamada (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Christian Alexander Cruz, and Kira McLean (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) for the main roles.

We’ll let you know if we hear anything new. In the meantime, you can catch Dacre Montgomery in his latest horror movie, Faces of Death, which is now playing in theaters.
