The highly anticipated first trailer for Gina Prince-Bythewood’s movie adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone is now available. The film stars Cynthia Erivo and is based on the popular novel by Tomi Adeyemi, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Prince-Bythewood.
This action-packed fantasy movie follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman on a mission to bring magic back to the kingdom of Orïsha, which was brutally taken away by King Saran.
In the fantastical realm of Orïsha, a young woman embarks on a journey to restore the magic taken from her ancestors.
Together, she and her brother joined forces with the king’s children to rebel against his harsh leadership.
I’m so excited about this movie – the cast is incredible! We’ve got Thuso Mbedu playing Zélie, and Damson Idris as Prince Inan. Plus, Amandla Stenberg is Princess Amari, Tosin Cole is playing Tzain Adebola, and you can’t forget Lashana Lynch as Jumoke. It’s seriously a dream team!

The trailer for Children of Blood and Bone begins with a scene showing a younger version of Zélie, played by Lynch’s Jumoke, kneeling in the desert – long before we see Thuso Mbedu in the role.
In a voiceover, Jumoke explains to her daughter that Orïsha used to be a place filled with magic for everyone.
She went on to say, “You have an incredible natural talent, but people who were afraid of what we could do stole it from us.”
The trailer, set to Beyoncé’s ‘Energy (feat. Beam),’ shows exciting action sequences, hinting at an ongoing war between people who want magic to thrive and those who oppose it.
At one powerful point in the film, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character, King Saran, powerfully states: “Magic is a dangerous illness. We must eliminate it.”
Zélie’s mother, Mama Agba, played by Davis, tells Zélie she’s been preparing her for years because she believes Zélie is the key to restoring magic.
Alongside the trailer, Paramount has released 11 official character posters for the film.
The movie Children of Blood and Bone will be released in the US on January 15, 2027, and in the UK on February 5, 2027.
