Creator of Charli XCX’s famous ‘Apple dance’ speaks out after fan sparked fierce backlash for gatecrashing choreography
As a dedicated Charli XCX fan and an avid follower of the dance community on TikTok, I’ve seen the Apple dance craze take over the internet and live performances. Being a part of such a vibrant and passionate fanbase, it’s always heartening to see people coming together to celebrate their love for music and dance.
A Charli XCX fan has come under fire for her BRAT move during the singer’s New York concert – but those involved say it’s all been worked out in the remix.
People on social media expressed their anger following a video where Kelly Heyer, the creator of the popular ‘Apple dance’, was interrupted mid-performance by an enthusiastic spectator.
In response to her supporters rallying to her side, Heyer kindly requested everyone to show understanding towards the woman seen in the video. She mentioned that despite not having a prior relationship with her, this woman has already extended an apology.
“Guys, let’s clear up something before it becomes a bigger issue – the girl who teamed up with me on Apple, I didn’t know her prior to connecting on social media. She expressed regret, but I told her there was no need because I understand the situation.” – Heyer in a recent TikTok video.
She became incredibly thrilled by the lights, the music, and everything around her. We came up with a revised version for the song. However, under no circumstances should you reveal her personal information (identity), she warned her followers.
Subsequently, she reassured the digital combatants that her experience had not been spoiled, rather she continued to relish being in the spotlight.
‘It was such an amazing moment for me and Charli said those amazing nice words,’ she gushed.
The dancer expressed, ‘I hope the young lady’s enjoyment of the SWEAT tour isn’t spoiled by any inappropriate comments you might be posting.’
The creator of the popular TikTok dance, Heyer, expressed gratitude for those defending and backing her, yet kindly requested a touch of understanding and compassion towards the woman involved.
She kindly requested everyone not to reveal personal information about her (doxing). Instead, let’s try to tone down the comments a bit more gently, she suggested. Additionally, she acknowledged that she held some accountability for sharing the video as she hadn’t fully understood the circumstances at the time.
In an enthusiastic moment, I shared a video that my partner had captured of me without fully realizing the attention it would garner. I guess you could say it was unintentionally on my part to shine the spotlight on her within the realm of social media.
On Monday, Heyer attended the New York stop of the Charli and Troye Sivan’s SWEAT tour, enjoying the performance, having been selected as ‘the Apple Girl.’ This special role provides an audience member with the opportunity to appear on the big screen, performing a TikTok dance routine.
Online videos showcased the individual credited with creating the Apple dance, as they danced to the choreography featured in the hit album BRAT by the renowned popstar.

As others moved cautiously around her, avoiding interaction, a particular woman perceived this behavior as an opportunity to share a dance with her, causing some displeasure among online spectators.
One user expressed, ‘At first, the girl’s enthusiasm was touching, but she should have given herself a moment to pause. Just because you’re acquainted with someone online doesn’t automatically grant you access to invade their personal space and physically touch them anywhere.’
They continued: ‘She clearly wanted to finish her dance and was filming and didn’t wanna be interrupted.’
‘I’m so mad at that girl even tho she was just having fun, you’re an icon,’ said another.
‘That better be your friend cuz I would’ve thrown hands,’ cautioned another.
Others felt the criticism she woman faced was too harsh.
Oh, that girl looked really thrilled. It would have been sweet if her enthusiasm had been noticed,” is a possible paraphrase of the original sentence.
The person they were speaking with concurred, stating that everyone was unnecessarily exaggerating about the new girl joining. They added that it would have been more interesting if both of them had danced together instead.
‘The spotlight is big enough to contain both of them!’
