Could Mint return? BBC drama’s finale leaves major questions unanswered

The first season of the BBC crime drama Mint reached a thrilling conclusion as Shannon embraced her fate, but the ending left many questions unanswered. Fans are now eager to know if there will be a second season of the series created by Charlotte Regan.

Last night’s episodes (May 11th) showed Shannon (played by Emma Laird) becoming more involved in her father Dylan’s criminal activities. Dylan had distanced himself from the family business, leaving his children, Cat, Luke, and Ollie, in the care of Sam, a longtime friend. However, Sam proved to be even more ruthless and dangerous than the person he replaced.

Sam became increasingly involved in handling the family’s issues, while Shannon pleaded with Dylan to come back and fix things before it was too late. However, the end showed that Shannon had been working towards her own secret goal the whole time.

Okay, so I was totally shocked by the finale! It seemed like Shannon was finally starting to trust Sam, especially when she went back to his place with him after her birthday. I really thought she was accepting his leadership, but wow, was I wrong! It turned out she’d been playing him the whole time, pretending to get closer just to betray him. It was a huge twist and honestly, so dramatic!

Shannon took charge of her own life. Instead of following the path expected by her family for generations, she chose a violent act to break free. The final scene of Mint showed Shannon shooting Sam with his own gun, seeking revenge for Arran’s death, though it wasn’t clear if Sam survived. This open ending suggests the show could continue, but the BBC hasn’t confirmed a second season yet.

What to Read Next

Although the show’s ending left things unresolved, creator Charlotte Regan hinted that Mint might not return for another season. In an interview with Radio Times, she said she’s currently taking a break after the series launched. She also explained that it’s important to give the audience space to interpret the show and share their own ideas about what happens next.

The writer of Scrapper has suggested she’d be open to returning to the world of Mint if the opportunity arose. She playfully proposed a spin-off series focusing on Shannon’s grandmother, Ollie (played by Lindsay Duncan). Charlotte joked about a show titled ‘Ollie goes to Ibiza,’ imagining Ollie on a lively, pub-filled vacation, saying, “If the BBC would fund it, I’d love to see Ollie on a lads-on-tour style holiday with lots of pints!”

It’s unclear if the story will continue, but the way Mint ended definitely leaves the possibility open. A second season could focus on the consequences of Shannon shooting Sam, and whether it will finally break the family’s pattern of violence. However, the ending also suggests Shannon might be at risk of becoming like the people she’s been fighting against.

The future is uncertain for Cat and Ollie, as they’re still involved in the family’s criminal activities even though Dylan has left that life behind. Throughout its run, Mint often examined the burdens faced by different generations within a single family, and a new season could delve even deeper into these complex relationships.

The return of family patriarch Andy (Clive Russell) after his imprisonment is also a looming question for the show. He could try to reclaim leadership of the family business, either from prison or after his release, and challenge the women who are now in charge.

If the BBC decides to continue making Mint, it probably won’t be back on TV until 2027, if not later. For now, the story will remain unfinished, leaving some questions unanswered. However, you can still watch all available episodes of Mint on BBC iPlayer.
