Could a One Chicago true crossover event happen again? (PD showrunner weighs in)
As a die-hard fan who’s been through the highs and lows of the One Chicago universe, I can confidently say that the absence of a grand crossover event has left a gaping hole in my Wednesday nights. The pandemic and the strike action were understandable disruptions, but now that things are settling down, it’s high time for the Windy City’s finest to unite once more.
Previously, a crossover of all Chicago shows took place prior to the onset of the pandemic. Later, some characters occasionally appeared, yet the series didn’t join forces for another major event since then.
During the pandemic, it made sense due to restrictions on the number of people allowed on set and the difficulty of managing something as large as it was. However, a strike occurred in the summer of 2023, making the concept of a One Chicago crossover last year seem almost unrealistic.
Given the current situation is stabilizing, might there be another instance where multiple storylines converge, perhaps in a three-part series? By “crossover,” we’re referring to this event.
Gwen Sigan is positive about a One Chicago crossover event
Chicago PD’s head, Gwen Sigan, hasn’t definitively dismissed the idea of a joint episode. In fact, discussions about such an event have taken place among the three shows, according to her comments to TVLine. “There are always conversations,” she mentioned.
What’s preventing the simultaneous airing of the three shows? Primarily, it’s a matter of scheduling coordination. Although they are filmed around Chicago, the various production teams may be working in distinct locations and at different times throughout the day, which complicates the process. The key factor is ensuring all teams are at the right locations when needed.
Beyond just having a storyline, it’s essential that we don’t create a crossover event merely for the sake of doing so. The most satisfying crossover, in my opinion, was the last one, where every show played a significant role in the other’s hour during each episode.
Previously, the sequence of events began with either “Chicago Fire” or “Chicago Med,” followed by another show, and concluded with “Chicago PD.” It was engaging to observe how the narrative threads from all three series interwove, particularly in relation to the infection that served as a key element in a terrorist scheme.
We’re hopeful that there will be another true crossover event in the future.
All three One Chicago shows air on Wednesdays on NBC. Chicago PD ends the night at 10/9c.
