Conan O’Brien shocks Oscars crowd with awkward Jeffrey Epstein joke

Conan O’Brien surprised and upset many people at the Oscars on Sunday night with a direct joke referencing convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The show’s host began by pointing out that no British actors received nominations in the top award categories.

O’Brien noted that, for the first time in over a decade – since 2012 – no British actors received nominations for either the Best Actor or Best Actress awards.

‘British spokesperson said “yeah, well at least we arrest our pedophiles”, so they got that.’ 

People in the Dolby Theatre responded with uneasy laughter and quiet expressions of surprise. At home, viewers were taken aback by how straightforward O’Brien was.

Besides Ghislaine Maxwell, who received a 20-year prison sentence for helping her ex-boyfriend Epstein abuse underage girls, no one in the United States has been arrested in connection with Epstein or the individuals named in related documents.

Prince Andrew, a friend of Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested last month in the UK on suspicion of abusing his position of power.

He was suspected of sharing confidential information with a person convicted of child sexual abuse while working as a trade representative for the UK government.

Following a 22-year career in the Royal Navy, Andrew was appointed as the UK’s representative for international trade and investment in 2001.

He stepped down in 2011 amid the fury over his friendship with Epstein.

Recently released emails from the Department of Justice suggest the former duke was sharing details about official trips to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore.

An email from November 2010 seemed to have been forwarded by Andrew just five minutes after it was originally sent by his advisor at the time, Amir Patel.

On Christmas Eve in 2010, someone sent Epstein a private document outlining potential investment opportunities related to rebuilding Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

After being arrested, Andrew was released while authorities continued their investigation. He has consistently maintained his innocence regarding any improper behavior connected to his relationship with Epstein.

After losing his royal titles last year – a decision made by his brother, King Charles III – he was arrested.

Virginia Giuffre accused Prince Andrew of sexual assault, but he denied ever meeting her. In 2022, he paid her millions of dollars to settle a civil lawsuit related to the allegations.

Following his arrest, King Charles expressed deep concern upon hearing the news regarding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and allegations of misconduct while holding public office.
