As a huge fan, I’m so excited! This week, we finally get to see back on the big screen after seven years with a brand new adventure! It follows Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and his young Force-sensitive companion as they travel to different planets. It feels like everything that’s been building on Disney+ over the years – they’re calling it “The MandoVerse” now – is all coming together in this film.
The world of The Mandalorian is becoming a significant part of the Star Wars universe, particularly with its upcoming theatrical release. Whether you’re new to the Disney+ series or just need a reminder, here’s what you should know about the MandoVerse.
The Mandalorian Kicks Off the MandoVerse
It all started for me with The Mandalorian. When Disney+ launched in 2019, this Star Wars show immediately grabbed my attention. It follows Din Djarin, a Mandalorian who became a bounty hunter after the Empire fell. He takes on a job from an Imperial remnant to find a specific person, but instead of handing them over, he ends up protecting a really special little kid with the Force – a kid whose past is a total mystery. He just couldn’t leave him, and honestly, neither could I!
In Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin continues his quest to learn about the child, eventually discovering the child’s name is Grogu and that he possesses Jedi abilities. Throughout the season, he encounters several characters from the Star Wars saga, such as the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano, bounty hunter Boba Fett, and Mandalorian warrior Bo-Katan Kryze. The season concludes with Din Djarin and his companions defeating the Imperial forces chasing them, paving the way for Grogu to begin Jedi training.
The Book of Boba Fett Is a Fun But Flawed Interlude
Following the events of The Mandalorian Season 2, The Book of Boba Fett premiered on Disney+ in 2021. The show centers on Boba Fett’s attempt to establish a criminal organization on Tatooine, taking over after Jabba the Hutt’s defeat. The series also features flashbacks to Boba Fett’s experiences surviving after falling into the Sarlaac pit. Although it’s received the lowest ratings of any show in the Star Wars universe so far, The Book of Boba Fett still offers enjoyable moments for fans.
This series is an important part of the overall story of the Mandalorian universe and should be watched before Season 3 of The Mandalorian. Two episodes specifically focus on how Din Djarin and Grogu find their way back to each other after Grogu begins Jedi training with Luke Skywalker. Ultimately, the series brings them back together, setting the stage for new adventures.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Features the Return of Mandalore
This season picks up right after the story of The Book of Boba Fett, continuing the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu across the galaxy. A central focus is the rebuilding of Mandalore, a planet destroyed by the Empire a long time ago. Din Djarin joins forces with Princess Bo-Katan Kryze, and together they lead a group of Mandalorians in a fight to take back their home planet.
This season of The Mandalorian delves deeper into the remaining forces of the evil Empire, revealing their plan to resurrect Grand Admiral Thrawn, a brilliant strategist who vanished near the end of the Galactic Civil War. Although Din Djarin and his allies defeat Moff Gideon, other dangerous Imperial leaders are still out there. After briefly returning to their home on Navarro, Mando and Grogu resume their mission to track down these remaining warlords, now with Mandalore reclaimed.
Ahsoka Takes a Trip to a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Following her appearances in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano now stars in her own Disney+ series, which begins a new chapter for the Star Wars universe. The series follows Ahsoka as she tries to prevent powerful dark forces from bringing back Grand Admiral Thrawn. To succeed, she joins forces with the remaining members of Phoenix Squadron, including her former student, Sabine Wren.
In a first for the Star Wars universe, the series Ahsoka takes viewers to a brand-new galaxy, where the exiled Grand Admiral Thrawn is being held. He escapes with the aid of some unlikely and dangerous allies, returning to the familiar Star Wars galaxy—and unintentionally brings the long-lost Jedi Ezra Bridger with him. Meanwhile, Ahsoka and Sabine are stranded in this far-off galaxy with no clear path back home.
The second season of Ahsoka is scheduled to arrive in 2027. While it’s not yet known exactly where it fits within the overall Star Wars timeline (often called the MandoVerse), it will probably take place after the events of The Mandalorian and Grogu. This new season is anticipated to lead into a future Star Wars movie from Dave Filoni, which will conclude the MandoVerse storyline.
Skeleton Crew Is a Fun Standalone Adventure in the MandoVerse
Okay, so let’s be real – this series isn’t super connected to everything else happening in the Disney+ Star Wars universe. It mostly just shares the same timeline and throws in a few familiar faces here and there. But honestly? That’s perfectly fine. It’s a really enjoyable romp through the galaxy far, far away, and I think it’s designed to appeal to Star Wars fans of all ages – from the youngest Padawans to the seasoned Jedi Masters.
The new 2024 Star Wars series centers around a group of children from At Attin, a remote planet that doesn’t know the Old Republic has fallen. They unintentionally leave their home on a forgotten spaceship and find themselves caught up in the dangerous world of pirates and smugglers. As they learn the truth about At Attin, they must fight to protect their planet from a ruthless pirate leader named Jod Na Nawood.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Brings Star Wars Back to the Big Screen
The Mandalorian and Grogu is a film and the first to be shown in movie theaters. It picks up after the events of Season 3 of The Mandalorian, with Din Djarin and Grogu working on a mission for the New Republic. Having already helped defeat several Imperial leaders, they now take on a new assignment that leads them back into the criminal side of the galaxy.
The new movie will primarily be a self-contained story focusing on Din Djarin and Grogu, though it might offer small clues about what’s next for the wider Star Wars universe. Expect to see some returning characters like the ruthless bounty hunter Embo, Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios from Phoenix Squadron, and Rotta the Hutt, son of the famous Jabba the Hutt.
More Star Wars stories are planned to follow the events of this recent series. Season 2 of Ahsoka is scheduled to debut in early 2027, and will lead into a new, currently untitled film by Dave Filoni. This film is intended to conclude the story arc involving Grand Admiral Thrawn. What happens with the Star Wars universe connected to The Mandalorian after Filoni’s film will likely depend on how well both it and The Mandalorian and Grogu perform in theaters.
The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
