Choose Your Own Adventure Is Finally Becoming a Movie

After a long wait, the popular Choose Your Own Adventure book series is finally becoming a movie! The directors who will be leading the film have also been announced as production begins.

20th Century Studios is developing a movie based on the popular “Choose Your Own Adventure” book series. The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for their work on films like Ready or Not, Scream VI, and Abigail. The screenplay is written by Tom Bissell, who has also worked on Andor and The Disaster Artist. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett will also produce the movie.

How Will a Choose Your Own Adventure Movie Work?

Currently, we don’t know what the Choose Your Own Adventure movie will be about. It’s unclear how the unique interactive experience of the original books – where readers choose their own path by turning to different pages – will work in a movie. While viewers won’t be able to make choices like they did in the books, filmmakers might find creative ways to capture that spirit of interaction.

Back in 2018, Netflix tried something different with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. This special episode let viewers make choices that changed the story and led to different endings. Because many of these endings were unhappy, Bandersnatch seemed to encourage people to replay and explore all the possible outcomes. While it was a novel idea, reviews were mixed, and eventually Netflix removed it from its streaming service.

Clue Could Be Looked at for Inspiration

The upcoming Choose Your Own Adventure movie could learn from the Clue adaptation. Clue, based on the board game, was made with three different endings, each revealing a different killer and solving the mystery in a unique way. These versions were shown randomly in theaters, so audiences didn’t know which one they’d see. When the movie came out on home video, all three endings were included, played one after the other.

I first discovered these amazing books by Edward Packard back in the eighties! It all started with The Cave of Time in 1979, and I quickly got hooked. Titles like Journey Under the Sea, Space and Beyond, and Prisoner of the Ant People were instant favorites. What made them so special was that you got to choose your own path, leading to all sorts of endings – some were great, some were scary, and some were just really surprising! They became a huge deal, and it’s no wonder they’ve sold millions of copies around the world. I still remember the excitement of picking a different path and seeing where the story would take me!

A release date has not yet been set for the Choose Your Own Adventure movie.
