Kalshi has applied to offer long-term futures contracts for popular cryptocurrencies like XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin in the U.S.

Summary

  • Kalshi reportedly filed to certify XRP, Solana, Dogecoin and other altcoin perpetual futures in the U.S.
  • The move follows CFTC approval for Kalshi’s Bitcoin perpetual futures contract, known as BTCPERP.
  • Kalshi’s reported XRP filing follows rising demand for regulated U.S. crypto derivatives products.

Kalshi is looking to broaden its offerings of cryptocurrency-based contracts beyond just Bitcoin. According to a report from BankXRP, the company has applied to offer ongoing futures contracts for XRP, Solana (SOL), Dogecoin (DOGE), and other alternative cryptocurrencies within the United States.

This new offering hasn’t gained as much public support as Kalshi’s Bitcoin contract. Because of this, we’re considering it a reported filing, meaning it’s under review and not yet officially launched.

CFTC path follows Bitcoin approval

Kalshi has been given the go-ahead by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to offer its Bitcoin perpetual futures contract. The company formally requested the Commission review the contract, known as BTCPERP, under existing regulations.

The CFTC also noted that perpetual contracts aren’t ideal for all types of assets. They advised companies to get approval for new products based on different assets before making them available for trading.

This is important for XRP and other alternative cryptocurrencies. Even though Kalshi has submitted these products, each individual contract might still require a separate approval process before trading can begin.

CF Benchmarks may support pricing

Kalshi intends to incorporate pricing data from CF Benchmarks into its new cryptocurrency trading products. CF Benchmarks is already a well-established provider of regulated cryptocurrency rates used by many financial institutions.

Kalshi can use this pricing system to determine fair prices and fees for contracts that don’t expire. These ongoing contracts typically use payments to ensure their price stays near the current market price.

Compared to previous market trends, XRP is currently seeing more involvement from institutional investors. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) is using data from CF Benchmarks for XRP futures, and reports indicate increased activity on the XRP Ledger alongside growing interest in XRP exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Regulated crypto derivatives race expands

As crypto.news reported earlier, Kalshi was authorized by the CFTC to offer BTCPERP futures, and Coinbase has begun providing a legal way for U.S. institutions to trade through products connected to Deribit.

According to crypto.news, Kraken intends to begin offering regulated Bitcoin perpetual futures contracts via its subsidiary, Bitnomial, within the next month. This development positions Kraken alongside Kalshi and Coinbase in a rapidly evolving market for U.S. derivatives.

As a researcher tracking the growth of prediction markets, I’ve been following Kalshi closely. It’s become much more than just a platform for predictions; recently, Crypto.news reported they achieved a $22 billion valuation following a $1 billion Series F funding round. What’s particularly interesting is the significant increase we’re seeing in trading volume from institutional investors.

This new XRP filing builds on recent growth in the crypto market. If it’s approved, U.S. investors will be able to trade XRP’s price fluctuations using perpetual futures contracts, all without actually owning the XRP tokens themselves.

Right now, the most important thing is how these cryptocurrencies are legally viewed. Bitcoin futures have been officially approved by the CFTC on Kalshi. However, futures for XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin are still under review – the CFTC needs to give its approval, or Kalshi needs to announce an official launch, before they’re fully cleared.
