Samsung Securities, Samsung SDS, and Samsung Card are investing around $408 million (612.8 billion won) in cash. This move highlights growing interest from major companies in the technology that supports digital assets, as South Korea continues to expand its involvement in blockchain and tokenized finance.
According to a recent report, the agreement is expected to be finalized on June 19th. It centers around 1.39 million shares of Dunamu, which were formerly held by companies associated with Kakao. Samsung Securities will purchase a 2% ownership stake, and both Samsung SDS and Samsung Card will each acquire 1%.
Samsung is expanding its role in Asia’s biggest cryptocurrency markets as competition in the digital finance world heats up.
Samsung targets digital finance expansion
Samsung companies are increasing their investment in blockchain technology, including digital currencies, tokenized assets, and stablecoins, as the competition heats up in South Korea’s financial technology sector. Specifically, Samsung Securities will partner with Dunamu to explore issuing tokenized securities, develop virtual asset products, and build the necessary digital investment tools.
Samsung SDS is working with Dunamu to integrate its expertise in AI, cloud technology, cybersecurity, and data management with Dunamu’s blockchain technology. This collaboration is expected to grow blockchain services for businesses and improve South Korea’s digital finance systems.
Samsung Card is looking into offering payment services connected to cryptocurrency. Leaders at the company mentioned that future stablecoins, pegged to the Korean won, might be added to their Monimo financial platform, showing increasing interest in digital payments using blockchain technology. They also anticipate that cryptocurrency exchanges will become more important for online shopping and managing digital assets.
As a researcher following this development, it’s clear Samsung sees a significant future in digital assets. A Samsung representative told me the investment is intended to help their companies become leaders in this fast-changing market. Dunamu, the company receiving the investment, also expressed excitement, and we can anticipate potential collaboration in areas like blockchain-based payments, using AI to improve financial services, and creating new tokenized investment options.
Regulators face rising pressure on crypto ties
This investment is happening while South Korean officials are considering closer connections between banks and the cryptocurrency industry. Hana Bank has asked for permission to buy a 6.55% share of Dunamu for almost 1 trillion won. If approved, this would be the biggest investment in a crypto exchange ever made by a South Korean bank.
Regulators are still increasing their scrutiny of companies dealing with cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. Recently, South Korea’s financial crime investigators challenged a court decision that had cancelled penalties against Dunamu, a company they’d previously sanctioned due to compliance issues.
Despite increased government regulation, more and more institutions are showing interest in digital assets in South Korea. Last year, Samsung Electronics strengthened its involvement in cryptocurrency by expanding its partnership with Coinbase. This included adding crypto trading options and wallet capabilities to Samsung Wallet for users in the U.S.
Dunamu’s investment highlights a growing trend among large Korean companies: a move towards building financial systems using blockchain technology. These companies are increasingly seeing digital assets, tokenized finance, and stablecoin payments as key components of the future of finance.
