Colleen Hoover’s New Movie Almost Earned Her First R-Rating Before A Key Scene Was Cut

Colleen Hoover has a new adaptation coming out, based on her popular novel, Reminders of Him.

Colleen Hoover’s novel, Reminders of Him, was released in 2022 and recently adapted into a film. The movie stars Maika Monroe as Kenna Rowan, a woman recently released from prison who is struggling to rebuild her life and confront her past. She finds an unexpected connection with Ledger Ward, played by Tyriq Withers, a man who appears to be linked to her troubled history. Despite knowing it might be a mistake, Kenna and Ledger fall in love and begin a relationship in Kenna’s apartment.

I recently spoke with director Vanessa Caswill about her film, Reminders of Him, and she revealed they almost went for an R-rating. Apparently, there was a sex scene in the original book, but they ultimately decided to cut it. The book featured a very detailed first intimate encounter between the characters, spanning several pages. I filmed it, we all did, but ultimately it was cut from the final version. Ironically, the studio actually praised the scene when we showed it to them, saying it was well done.

Caswill originally planned to include a particularly intimate scene, but ultimately decided against it. Including it would have meant the movie couldn’t receive its current PG-13 rating, potentially excluding many fans of Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him. Despite this cut, the movie still features plenty of romantic and intimate moments. Hoover explained she had to balance pleasing readers with the realities of adapting a book to film, meaning some favorite scenes had to be left out.

Colleen Hoover’s books are being adapted into films, but not all the attention is positive. Her popular novel, It Ends With Us, recently became a topic of controversy. The film stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have been in the news due to legal issues and reports of misconduct during production.
