Clash Royale is getting some exciting updates! Players can look forward to new game modes like CHAOS, and a major update planned for Mid-March 2026. This update will significantly improve Heroes – giving players more ways to unlock them – and also includes changes to how you build decks and earn rewards.
This update brings a new way to unlock heroes, a redesigned deck slot system, better rewards from 5-Star Magic Lucky Chests, and several smaller improvements to make the game more enjoyable. Here’s a breakdown of everything new.
Clash Royale Mid-March 2026 Update: All you need to know
New Hero Unlock system
Okay, so this update is awesome! They’ve added a new way to unlock heroes, and I get to choose exactly who I want! If I’m already in Arena 5 or higher, I’m getting 200 Hero Coins just for logging in when the update drops, and I can use those to grab any hero I’ve been wanting.
We’ve just released the Mid-March Update! Maintenance will begin shortly to introduce exciting new features.
Here’s what’s new:
✨ New Hero Unlock System:
– Get 200 free Hero Coins (available from Arena 5 onwards).
– You can now choose exactly which Heroes you want to unlock – no more random picks!
– Newly released Heroes will be available to unlock right away.✨ Deck Slot Changes:
– We’ve reduced the number of Special Deck Slots from 4 to 3…— Clash Royale (@ClashRoyale) March 16, 2026
Hero Coins have replaced Hero Fragments. Before, getting new Heroes was based on luck, but now you can choose the specific Hero you want as soon as you collect 200 Hero Coins.
You can also get Hero Coins by progressing on the free track of the Pass Royale, earning up to 75 each season. Look for this in the Heroes section under the Magic Items tab.
From now on, you’ll be able to unlock new Heroes right when they’re released, without having to wait for special events or rely on chance. If you have 200 Hero Coins, you can unlock them as soon as they’re added to the game.
Deck slot rework
As we announced last month with the big gameplay changes, this update revises how deck slots work. We’re lowering the maximum number of special deck slots you can have from four to three.
The new deck structure includes:
- 1 Evolution Slot: Only for Evolution cards
- 1 Hero Slot: For Heroes and Champions
- 1 Wild Slot: Can be used for Evolutions, Heroes, or Champions
As you advance through arenas in Trophy Road, you’ll unlock special slots. The Evolution Slot becomes available at Arena 3, the Hero Slot at Arena 5, and the Wild Slot at Arena 10.
5-Star Magic Lucky Chest improvements
We’ve significantly improved the rewards you get from 5-Star Magic Lucky Chests! You’ll now find a lot more Wild Cards inside – often enough to fully upgrade a card, depending on your chest level. In fact, you could see up to three times more rewards than before.
I was so excited to see the changes to Chest Level 16! They’ve seriously upped the number of Common Wild Cards you get – it’s gone from 2500 to a whopping 7500! Plus, they’ve boosted the rewards for Legendary and Champion Wild Cards too. To keep things fair, they’ve tweaked the drop rates. You’re now more likely to get Common and Rare Wild Cards, but the chance of getting some of the really rare ones is a little bit lower. Overall, it seems like a great update!
Other updates and additions
We’ve made a few updates! The Social tab now shows your Clan details when you tap the Clan icon, and your friends list is organized by how active they are in Ranked mode and their trophy levels. We’ve also improved Pass Royale with more understandable reward descriptions and notifications for players in Arenas 1-4 when unlocking Heroes.
We’ve fixed several bugs affecting gameplay, including issues with the Hero Barbarian Barrel, Executioner, Musketeer Evolution, and X-Bow modifiers. We’ve also improved C.H.A.O.S Mode and Merge Tactics, and made the game more stable overall. Plus, we’ve added some visual and audio enhancements.
