Cillian Murphy’s Panned Action Thriller Is Available on Free Streaming 7 Years After Flopping in Theaters

I was so excited to find out that Anna, the 2019 action movie with Cillian Murphy (you might know him from The Fifth Element!), is now available to watch for free on Pluto TV! It’s a really fun thriller and I’m glad more people can check it out.

Anna, the action thriller starring Sasha Luss, joined the platform on April 1st. It was added alongside other popular action movies like the Escape Plan trilogy with Sylvester Stallone, Clear and Present Danger, and Jack Reacher. Released in 2019, the film features Luss as Anna, a stunning and skilled spy who becomes a dangerous assassin.

Anna Flopped in Theaters Despite Luc Besson’s Stylish Action Sequences

Even though Anna’s main actress wasn’t a well-known name, the movie still attracted audiences thanks to its other big stars. Along with Murphy, Helen Mirren and Luke Evans also appeared in the film, and director Besson’s reputation from previous successful action movies helped draw viewers as well.

The film didn’t perform well in theaters, mainly because critics weren’t impressed. They found Anna uninspired, which was surprising since it was a type of movie director Besson often makes. With a production cost of $30 million, the film only earned $31.6 million worldwide – a significant financial disappointment.

Despite receiving a 34% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the film Anna has resonated with viewers. With over 1,000 audience reviews, a strong 81% gave it a positive rating, with many highlighting the exciting action and considering it a hidden gem. Its recent availability on free streaming makes it a great opportunity to discover this underrated action thriller.

Murphy’s Latest Netflix Movie Became an Instant Streaming Sensation

Although the movie Anna wasn’t a big hit when it came out, Murphy’s latest film is doing very well. Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which continues the popular British TV show, had a short run in theaters last month before becoming available worldwide on Netflix on March 20th. It quickly became one of the platform’s most popular titles.

Netflix’s Tudum event highlighted that The Immortal Man had the third-best opening weekend of any film on the platform this year, earning 25.3 million views and totaling 48.1 million hours watched. Only The Rip, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and the Peaky Blinders film performed better. The Immortal Man quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s global charts, becoming a hit just one day after its release.

Fans of Murphy have a few more projects to anticipate. He’s currently shooting a new prison drama directed and written by Damien Chazelle, who’s known for La La Land, and he’s also confirmed to appear in another installment of the popular series. Release dates for either film haven’t been announced yet.

Anna is now streaming for free on Pluto TV.
