Prime Video revives a sci-fi movie.
Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson are both well-known actors in the science fiction world. Pratt is a leading star in the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially as Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Ferguson, meanwhile, appears in a highly acclaimed and beloved sci-fi franchise.
Rebecca Ferguson will reprise her role in the upcoming Dune: Part Three, continuing her work with director Denis Villeneuve. Before Dune, Ferguson and Villeneuve collaborated on the film Mercy, though it wasn’t successful in theaters. Now, Mercy is finding a new audience on streaming platforms.
The movie Mercy is currently the top film on Prime Video in the U.S., according to data from FlixPatrol. It quickly became popular after its release on March 22, surpassing other titles like Sinners, Melania, and The Bluff.
The sci-fi film Mercy, starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, is a hit on Prime Video, not just in the US but globally. It’s currently the most-watched movie on the platform worldwide, surpassing recent releases like Agent Zeta, The Bluff, and Afterburn in popularity.
I’m honestly surprised by how huge Mercy is becoming on Prime Video! It’s currently the number one movie in a whopping 20 countries – including big markets like the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, and Australia – and is trending in 47 countries overall. This is a total turnaround, considering it only made around $54.6 million in theaters worldwide. It really shows how streaming can give a film a second life, and a much bigger audience!
With a production budget of $60 million, the sci-fi film Mercy needed to earn between $120 and $150 million worldwide just to cover its costs. Unfortunately, it didn’t reach that goal and lost the studio a significant amount of money. Poor reviews likely contributed to its box office failure; Mercy currently has a dismal 25% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Many people probably didn’t go to see the movie in theaters, but now that it’s streaming on Prime Video, it’s gaining a following. As of today, viewers have given Mercy an impressive 83% audience score. The film centers around Detective Chris Raven, played by Pratt, who has just 90 minutes to convince an AI judge (Ferguson) that he’s innocent of murdering his wife.
