Cher withdraws bid for conservatorship of troubled son Elijah Blue Allman after the two finally ‘reach agreement’ in bitter feud
As a seasoned observer of celebrity lives and someone who has been through my fair share of family turmoil, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of empathy for Elijah Allman, son of the iconic Cher and stepson to Gregg Allman. The rollercoaster ride that is their family dynamics is nothing short of breathtaking, with allegations flying left and right.
In simpler terms, DailyMail.com reports that Elijah Blue Allman, Cher’s recovering drug-addict son, has successfully fought off his mother’s attempts to exert control over his life in a long-standing legal dispute.
The nearly year-long legal battle came to an end on Friday after the 78-year-old filed a notice to withdraw her bid for a conservatorship of her son at Los Angeles Superior Court.
During a quick Zoom court session, Judge Jessica Uzcategui officially closed the case by addressing both legal teams: “I extend my warm congratulations to everyone involved.
Neither Cher, nor Elijah, 48, appeared in person or via video at the hearing.
In contrast to what his late rocker father Greg Allman wished, his son strongly objected to the proposal of a conservatorship. When his renowned mother requested the court to set one up towards the end of last year, the judge refused.
However, Judge Uzcategui initially declined to dismiss Cher’s case outright at that time, instead keeping it active until this week. This provided Allman with an opportunity to demonstrate his responsibility, and allowed the mother and son to meet for a ‘private mediation’ session led by a retired judge, aiming to resolve their disputes.
It was confirmed on Monday that the mediation was successful, as the court learned. Cher and Allman managed to come to an understanding without disclosing any specifics about their agreement during the hearing.
Last December, Cher presented a request to the court stating that due to Elijah’s history of substance abuse, as well as mental and physical health problems, it is inappropriate for him to handle the $120,000 yearly income from a trust fund established by his father, because he is unable to responsibly manage it.
The renowned singer expressed concern that he might use his $30,000 regular payments for drugs, potentially endangering his own life.
But Elijah blasted his mom, calling her ‘misguided’ and ‘unfit’ to control a conservatorship.
In legal records, he stated, “In the past, I’ve witnessed her struggle with depression, and I don’t think she has the ability to make sound judgments regarding my estate.
I don’t require a conservatorship. I am the one capable of battling my personal struggles, and I am managing it on my own.
A conservatorship seems suitable when an individual lacks the ability, to a significant degree, to handle their own financial affairs and is vulnerable to being deceived or exploited.
Since the filing of the petition, here’s what I’ve been up to: I’ve taken care of my bills, directed the trustee of the trust to handle additional expenses, launched new music alongside my band Deadsy on February 8, and have ongoing discussions about potential creative endeavors.
Apart from handling my finances myself, I’ve opted for the assistance of an accounting firm to help with tax payments and financial management. Rest assured, I’ve always been self-reliant when it comes to managing my own financial resources, successfully avoiding any fraud or undue influence. As such, a conservatorship is unnecessary in my case.
Allman vigorously disputed his mother’s assertions, stating he was not mentally unwell and at risk of returning to the drugs that came close to ruining his life.
He stated that his mother’s request presents two issues: one, there are worries about his potential mental health struggles, and two, there’s a concern that he uses funds from the trust for purchasing drugs, which puts him in grave danger.
‘I have struggled with addiction but I am not mentally ill. The absence of evidence of the concerns (related to ‘cyclical’ mental illness addiction) raised in the petition over the last months are evidence that I have control over my faculties and that I am not mentally ill.
Last September, DailyMail.com reported exclusively that at age 47, Allman was admitted to a rehabilitation facility following an incident where he collapsed on the sidewalk outside the Chateau Marmont hotel in New York City, where he resided.
In the days leading up to that incident, he was frequently spotted wandering near the well-known hotel where actor John Belushi tragically passed away due to an overdose in 1982.
In his petition, Allman said: ‘I know that my mother’s objectives are not nefarious….I know that my mother’s actions are meant to help me – but I do not need this help.’
In her bid to gain control over Elijah’s affairs, Cher accused his wife, the rock singer Marieangela ‘Queeny’ King, aged 37 – whom he had planned to divorce last year but reconciled with after a kiss and deciding to rekindle their 11-year marriage. Instead of saying “pointed the finger of blame,” you can use phrases like “accused” or “implicated.
In his life, Cher suggested that King had a negative influence, making it difficult for him to maintain a drug-free and abstinent lifestyle.
In response, the king accused Cher of attempting to sabotage her reconciliation with Elijah by abducting him and admitting him into a rehabilitation center. However, Cher refuted this claim.
According to the court records, Allman stated that his relationship with his mother has been tense for a long time. To illustrate this, he mentioned an incident on October 17, 2023, where his mother arranged for him to be taken to Mexico under the pretense of receiving ‘holistic alternative therapy.’
As soon as I got to Mexico, I was informed that I wasn’t there for holistic or alternative healing, and it turned out I wasn’t allowed to depart either.
‘It was my wife who retained counsel and negotiated my release from the facility in Mexico.
Although I’d like to trust that my mother has my best interests at heart, my own experiences suggest she may not be capable of handling financial matters effectively. This gives me significant reservations about allowing her to oversee any of my finances in a court setting.
Additionally, Cher, mother to Chaz Bono (age 56), from her earlier marriage with the late Sonny Bono, maintains that, in the role of Elijah’s mother, she is most qualified to serve as his conservator. She has expressed that this decision has garnered familial support.
Regarding Elijah and King’s marriage, it has been characterized by a recurring pattern of struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues, as stated in the court documents.
According to Cher, King is not helping with Elijah’s recovery process and, in fact, seems to be working against it by preventing him from becoming clean and sober, as well as denying him necessary mental health care.
In response to this, she provided a statement to DailyMail.com regarding the ‘rehab’ center in Mexico that Allman mentioned in his court documents.
She claimed that Cher confined Elijah to a lockdown center in Mexico, asserting that she has historically kept her out of making decisions regarding his care.
‘I have always been a champion for the sober community and for Elijah’s sobriety,’ King said.
I find it unacceptable when institutions fail to include my participation in Elijah’s care and his journey towards recovery.
As a devoted follower, I strongly object to the situation that unfolded on or around October 17, 2023, where Elijah was deceived and forced into adhering to an unverified alternative medical treatment plan. The events that followed were even more distressing, as he found himself confined within a locked facility in Mexico, sleeping alongside six others, all of us under the imposition of a Mexican Conservatorship. This situation is far from acceptable to me.
