Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox reveals how Marvel saved the Disney+ series.
The new Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again, follows Matt Murdock as he returns to fighting crime as Daredevil after a year-long break. But when Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, becomes mayor of New York and creates a team to stop vigilantes, Daredevil is forced to come out of retirement to battle Fisk and save the city from his growing corruption.
Charlie Cox, star of the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, recently shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he and co-star Vincent D’Onofrio (who plays Kingpin) appreciated Marvel Studios‘ willingness to listen to their feedback. Cox explained that they had expressed concerns about the show’s direction before filming began. Marvel responded by completely revising the entire first season after everyone agreed the original plan wasn’t working.
Cox explained that they initially tried to differentiate the new Disney+ series from the original Netflix show by altering its overall feel. However, the cast soon realized that sticking to the core concept would inevitably pull the story too far away from what fans already loved. Both Cox and D’Onofrio felt that significantly distancing Daredevil: Born Again from its roots would erase everything that made the original series so successful. Cox emphasized that the darker, more realistic themes were key to the Netflix show’s appeal and its characters, and changing that would have been a mistake.
Cox expressed his gratitude to Marvel for their willingness to overhaul Daredevil: Born Again so late in production. He understands the financial gamble that decision represented, and he deeply appreciates the studio taking that risk. He also highlighted their receptiveness to feedback from both him and D’Onofrio throughout the creative process.
Cox explained that many TV studios thought the classic procedural format was becoming obsolete and wouldn’t last. However, he believes audiences still love these shows because they’re so engaging and challenging to make well. He also mentioned that Kevin Feige later shared Marvel Studios specifically wanted to bring this type of storytelling to Disney+, and Daredevil felt like the perfect fit.
Daredevil: Born Again seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Disney+.
