The situation began on Saturday when footballer Jorginho posted on Instagram, alleging that the bodyguard of someone named Chappell threatened the daughter of his wife, Catherine Harding. Harding shares the 11-year-old daughter with actor Jude Law, and the threat occurred after the girl saw Chappell at the same hotel in Brazil.

Chappell claimed she wasn’t aware of the situation and quickly added that she likes children, but it was too late – the internet had already reacted with a flood of memes.

People said the singer reminded them of Miss Trunchbull, the harsh and frightening headmistress from Roald Dahl’s stories, known for her strict and often cruel punishments.

Social media users started joking that Chappell Roan seemed like a scary figure from folklore. One popular post on X compared her to the Baba Yaga, a witch-like character used in children’s stories to encourage good behavior, saying, ‘Chappell Roan isn’t real, she’s a modern myth to frighten kids. Better brush your teeth, or Chappell will come for you!’

People were amazed by the complicated situation Chappell had gotten into, all because of the famous family of her young fans.

One X user commented that Chappell Roan’s unique blend of sports and pop culture has landed her in a surprisingly unusual and unexpected position.

Following significant public criticism, the singer addressed a post by Jorginho in a video on Instagram Sunday, stating that the person who approached the child was not part of her security team and she hadn’t requested anyone to do so.

In the video, she explained her perspective on what happened today with a mother, a child, and a security guard – clarifying that the guard wasn’t hired for her personal protection.

I honestly didn’t notice anything unusual. I didn’t see a woman or a child, and no one approached me. I was simply having breakfast at my hotel. It seems these individuals were also guests at the hotel. This makes the fact that a security guard was…

I never asked the security guard to approach that mother and child. They came to me, I didn’t initiate any contact. It’s unfair for security to assume someone is doing something wrong without any evidence or action to support that belief.

I don’t dislike anyone who enjoys my music, and the idea that I’d dislike children is absurd. I apologize to the mother and child who were affected by someone’s false assumptions.

‘If you felt uncomfortable that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.’ 

Jude Law’s ex-partner, Catherine Harding, responded on Sunday by posting videos to Instagram. In the videos, she shared her account of what happened while she was having breakfast with their daughter.

In a recent video, Cat explained that Chappell claims she wasn’t responsible for the security and didn’t commit the act. Cat clarified that the person involved wasn’t a hotel security guard, but someone who manages artists.

I’m not sure if he’s her bodyguard, but he was with her, and that’s all I can confirm. I don’t know if she asked him to do it, and I really hope she didn’t.

As a public figure, you also have a duty to ensure that anyone working for you is truly representing your values and intentions.

Would he really take that action without her permission? I’m not sure. If he does, that’s a serious issue, as it would mean he’s portraying her views inaccurately and against her wishes.

Catherine agreed with Chappell, stating she hadn’t seen anything unusual. She explained that her daughter simply walked quietly past the musician’s table, and nothing else occurred.

She told him her daughter, whose parents include a well-known figure and her stepfather, was aware of what behavior is expected of people in the public spotlight. However, she added that the security guard hadn’t paid attention to this.

I’m hoping Chappell wasn’t aware of this and didn’t ask her security team to intervene. We genuinely admire her talent – we thought very highly of her work and traveled all the way to São Paulo to see her show.

It was her birthday, and she asked for tickets to a show. We were supposed to go last night, but unfortunately couldn’t make it, which put a damper on things, but that’s just how it goes.

I hope she realizes, and prevents her employees from treating people this way in the future.
