Chappell Roan, an American singer, upset some fans at the Laneway Festival this weekend by declining to do a ‘shoey’ – drinking from a shoe – as requested.
During her concert in Gold Coast on Saturday, the 27-year-old performer was encouraged by the crowd to participate in a strange Australian custom: drinking beer from a shoe.
A TikTok video surfaced showing the musician reacting to a shocking request from the audience.
She responded with disbelief to the fans chanting ‘Shoey,’ asking, ‘So you want me to drink beer from a shoe?’
Despite the pushback, the singer insisted on addressing an important topic, declaring to the enthusiastic crowd, ‘I want to talk about being gay.’
In 2024, Roan publicly came out as a lesbian, explaining that she finds the idea of kissing a man unappealing, stating she believes women are far more desirable partners.

It’s common at concerts for fans to chant ‘Shoo-ey! Shoo-ey!’ hoping the performer will participate in the fun.
Many visiting performers have been talked into doing a silly, and sometimes unpleasant, stage trick by their enthusiastic Australian fans.
Last month, Benson Boone became the latest touring artist to try out the notorious drinking game.
Okay, so I was at a concert in Sydney recently – the artist, just 22 years old, was performing at the Hordern Pavilion – and during a little break between songs, he did something really cool. It’s apparently a bit of a tradition at his shows, and the crowd loved it. It just felt like a really special, connected moment.
Instead of the usual tradition of drinking beer from a shoe, he chose to pour water from a bottle he had on stage.
‘When in Australia,’ he joked before he filled the footwear with water.
Oh my gosh, Chappell is finally coming to Australia! I can’t believe it! And guess what? They’re still going to be the main act at Laneway Festival when it hits Melbourne on February 13th. I’ve already got my tickets, and I’m counting down the days! It’s going to be amazing!
The ‘shoey’ – drinking beer directly from a shoe – is a well-known Australian custom. It’s used both as a playful initiation for newcomers and as a way to celebrate victories.
It gained popularity thanks to well-known athletes like Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo and UFC fighter Tai Tuivasa.
It is the practice of pouring alcohol into a sweaty shoe then skolling it.
Recently, the practice has faced criticism, with some well-known Australian musicians even asking for it to be stopped.
Popular artists like Post Malone, Lizzo, and Harry Styles have all become known for doing the ‘shoey’ – drinking beer from a shoe – during their concerts in Australia.
During her 2023 concert in Sydney, Lizzo jokingly exclaimed to the audience, “My shoe is disgusting! I can’t drink out of my shoe, what’s wrong with you guys?”
Harry said it was one of the most repulsive customs he’d ever seen, and then proceeded to drink directly from his expensive $1,170 Adidas x Gucci shoe.
‘I feel like a different person. I feel ashamed of myself,’ he said post-shoey.
It feels very private and vulnerable to share something so personal with so many people. I’m going to need to talk about this with my therapist quite a bit.
