Fans of video games are famously protective of the stories they love, which makes adapting those games into movies or TV shows a risky move for filmmakers. Because past video game movies have often been poorly received, there’s usually a lot of doubt when a studio tries to capitalize on the popularity of a well-known game like Minecraft or Super Mario Bros.
Some adaptations closely follow the original work – the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us is almost a direct recreation of the game. Others, however, drastically depart from it. Amazon’s Fallout series takes its own path, but still feels connected to the games. In contrast, Paramount’s Halo series shares very little with the games beyond the name and the look of the main character – it’s as if the creators only knew the cover art and guessed what the game might be about.
Adaptations that closely follow the original source material, like Arcane, tend to be much more popular than those that stray from it, such as Until Dawn. This suggests Hollywood should prioritize respecting the original work, using what’s already successful, and keeping fans happy. The success of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movies is largely due to the hidden references and nods to the game, rather than a complex or deep story – those are what bring audiences back for more.
Despite drastically changing the story from the original game, the Netflix animated series Castlevania is surprisingly excellent. Writer Warren Ellis reimagined the source material with his own unique approach, creating an adaptation that intentionally departs from what longtime fans expect – and somehow, it works brilliantly. It’s a truly exceptional and unusual video game adaptation.
Castlevania Is Nothing Like Its Source Material, But It’s Still A Great Show
When Warren Ellis was initially asked to create an animated series based on the Castlevania games, he wasn’t familiar with them. However, after learning more, he was drawn to the series’ dark atmosphere and visual style. The Konami games are set near Dracula’s castle and center on the Belmont family, who dedicate themselves to hunting vampires and other undead creatures.
Ellis saw the games as a fresh take on the Hammer horror films he loved as a child. He was more drawn to the overall style and genre than the details of the story or characters, and he created his own backstory and mythology for the franchise, effectively modernizing the Hammer classics. This naturally upset fans of the original material. In Hollywood, adaptations that stray too far and feel like “fan fiction” – like the 2018 Halloween and the Star Wars sequels – are often viewed negatively.
Whether or not it stays true to the original games, Castlevania is a truly excellent series. Its dark, gothic atmosphere appealed to a wide audience, and the Netflix adaptation quickly gained its own dedicated fans. It’s unusual for a TV show to have spinoffs that are also fantastic – like Cheers, Breaking Bad, and The Boys – but Castlevania has achieved that. Castlevania: Nocturne, which follows Richter Belmont during the French Revolution, delivers another compelling vampire story that, despite being different from the original, is a real standout.
As a longtime fan, it’s cool to see Castlevania thriving, but it’s split into two things now. You’ve got the classic games, which are still amazing after all these years, and then the Netflix series, which does its own thing. They’re pretty different, but I enjoy both! It reminds me a little of hoping the Halo show on Paramount would actually live up to the games – which, let’s be real, was a long shot.
