Carrie Fisher hated one element of Star Wars, but made it a power move

As a dedicated Star Wars fan and avid follower of Carrie Fisher‘s legacy, I cannot help but reflect fondly on her indelible impact on the saga’s most cherished moments. Her portrayal of Leia Organa has been an integral part of my life experience since childhood. From her defiance against Darth Vader to her haggling with Jabba the Hutt, Carrie Fisher brought depth and complexity to a character that transcended the silver screen.

As a devoted Star Wars gamer, I can’t help but reflect on my beloved experiences within this galaxy far, far away. It’s challenging to isolate my favorite aspects without invoking the indelible image of Carrie Fisher. Her portrayal of Leia Organa marked the introduction to the intriguing Force theme. She fearlessly defied Darth Vader despite being implicated in the theft of the Death Star plans, and even negotiated with a Hutt while brandishing a sci-fi grenade.

According to Far Out Magazine’s report, there was a part that she found particularly unpleasant which she now regrets experiencing, as explained by Swapnil Dhruv Bose.

Despite the positive experiences, there was one moment that Fisher always singled out as a mistake when reflecting on her long and memorable journey as a popular culture icon. For Star Wars fans, it’s probably easy to guess that the scene in question came in the third installment of the original trilogy: Return of the Jedi. Enslaved by the widely detested Jabba the Hutt, Leia is forced to wear an article of clothing that became infamously popular… Fisher publicly criticized it and described it as ‘what supermodels will eventually wear in the seventh ring of hell.’

Fisher dispreferred the ill-fitting bikini not just because of its discomfort, but as she shared in a 2016 interview with NPR, it symbolized an uncomfortable truth: reducing a powerful woman to an object to be conquered and rendered helpless. This notion brings to mind the passage from the “Return of the Jedi” novelization where this issue is highlighted.

Leia opened her mouth and closed her mind. It was disgusting, of course, but there worse things… The worse things she knew well… She’d endured these pains as she now endured Jabba’s loathsome touch–with a natural, inner strength.

Certainly, Fisher took pleasure in the upcoming act of vengeance. She found joy in the thought that Leia had killed Jabba in such a satisfying way, using the very chain to behead him. I can understand why she savored that moment so much.

In Jabba’s palace, some of the most distressing sequences occurred in the Star Wars trilogy. However, through her struggles, Carrie Fisher effectively transformed Leia into a stronger character. This is an valuable message for us all.
