Carol Kane reveals the part of Star Trek that terrified her the most
As a longtime Star Trek fan, I must confess that Carol Kane’s addition to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been nothing short of electrifying. Her portrayal of Pelia, the Lanthanite commander and chief of engineering, is a masterclass in quick-wittedness, sharp-tongued banter, and unyielding resilience. Yet, what truly captivated me was not her on-screen persona but rather the stark contrast between her real-life self and Pelia.
Carol Kane joined the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for its second season, playing Pelia, a high-ranking Starfleet officer who serves as both the Lanthanite commander and chief engineer. Her performance was exceptional – she was smart, quick, and never shied away from a verbal confrontation, even with Una Chin-Riley.
Pelia showed no fear, not even toward the Gorn. However, during an interview with ScreenRant, Kane admitted that she wasn’t as self-assured as her screen persona appeared to be. In truth, she confided in the publication that portraying the character was difficult for her because in reality, she is quite unlike her on-screen counterpart.
Even though finding harmony between her off-camera persona and her screen character wasn’t the biggest challenge, what truly frightened her was a common problem faced by numerous actors and actresses – understanding the technical jargon or tech-talk.
Star Trek often uses complex scientific terminology, which can make some scenes quite dense. Kane echoes this sentiment, expressing to ScreenRant that there are moments when the dialogue becomes heavily science-focused and dominates the scene.
“I was terrified. Just let me say, terrified. Because there’s sort of nothing to hold onto. You really just have to learn it so literally. And I’m very unfamiliar with almost everything I say.”
1. Given her position as the engineering lead, it’s no wonder she expressed those feelings. After all, the show’s technical language can be quite demanding, much like trying to adapt to the costumes from the early seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
If you haven’t been immersed much in scientific concepts, you might find it challenging to remember the intricate terminology involved. However, Kane has impressively managed this task and remains an essential contributor to the program, demonstrating her value as we move forward into season three.
As a passionate Star Trek fan, I must say, her entrance into the modern Star Trek era was nothing short of exceptional. Taking over from a beloved character like Hemmer (Bruce Horak) wasn’t an easy task, but she handled it brilliantly. On top of that, mastering the unique and humorous dialogue seemed challenging, yet she pulled it off flawlessly. In my book, she’s nailed the role with panache!
