Carl Weathers remembered for more than Star Wars

As a fan who has followed Carl Weathers’ incredible journey from the gridiron to the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration for this remarkable man. His life story is one that resonates deeply with me – a tale of resilience, determination, and versatility that transcends the boundaries of sports and entertainment.

Ever since Carl Weathers passed away in February, many have grieved over his demise. The Star Wars community, in particular, has felt the absence of the man who infused humor, strength, and humanity into the character Greef Karga from The Mandalorian. Another fanbase has shared similar sentiments about his passing.

Prior to embarking on his acting career, Weathers had a stint with the NFL, playing for the Oakland Raiders during the years 1970 and 1971. In the year 1970 alone, he participated in seven games, contributing significantly to the team’s success by helping them clinch the AFC West Division Championship.

Ever since he achieved fame, Weathers has established himself as a dedicated Raiders alum. From the years 1999 to 2001, he served as the narrator for their highlight films. Over the years, he’s attended numerous alumni events and even had the honor of lighting a torch before a home game in 2022. The torch was ceremoniously lit by past players and celebrities, paying tribute to the team’s late owner, Al Davis.

Upon his passing, the Raiders released a statement celebrating his life and mourning the loss:

Forever cherished as a Raiders loyalist, Weathers will be deeply mourned by his Raiders family and countless fans across the globe,” can serve as a paraphrase for the given statement. The organization also paid tribute to Weathers in their highlight reel, reminiscing about their last season and looking forward to the upcoming one with fondness.

The current NFL season is now in progress, but Mark Davis, the Raiders’ owner (son of Al Davis), temporarily paused his season schedule to be present at Weather’s star-unveiling ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was accompanied by a number of previous members of the team.

At the gathering, Davis made remarks about Carl Weathers, touching upon both his tenure with the Raiders and his acting talent. Davis stated, “Carl Weathers is more than just an actor to me. He’s a pioneer, a disruptor, and my friend.

In the Star Wars community, Weathers is not only remembered for his contributions but also for traits reminiscent of his time in the NFL, which found expression in the character Greef Karga.
