Carl Is Deceptively Important in the ‘Project Hail Mary’ Movie

When people think about the most important characters in Project Hail Mary, they usually focus on Dr. Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling) or Rocky (James Ortiz). While both are good choices, there’s actually a character who’s even more crucial to the story. This character’s involvement significantly impacts the plot and makes the mission’s success much harder to achieve. Interestingly, despite their importance, this character appears on screen for only a short amount of time.

Based on Andy Weir’s 2021 science fiction novel, Project Hail Mary has been a surprisingly big hit in theaters. Even without being part of a larger franchise – something most successful movies rely on these days – the film, starring Ryan Gosling, has become both a critical and commercial success, and audiences are really enjoying it. While Gosling’s performance has understandably drawn a lot of attention, it’s important to remember another character who plays a crucial, yet often overlooked, role in the story.

Why Carl Deserves Way More Praise In ‘Project Hail Mary’

Lionel Boyce, famous for his role as Marcus in The Bear, appears in Project Hail Mary as Carl, a character created specifically for the film. Though not in the original book, Carl plays a surprisingly key part in the story, both in how the main character, Grace, develops and in the overall plot. He’s a government security guard left to assist Grace with his research on the astrophage, and he offers a helpful solution when things get stuck. In a memorable scene, when Grace wonders if they have funds for supplies, Carl jokingly replies: “No…But I do.”

Okay, so the equipment Carl provides isn’t exactly top-of-the-line compared to what Grace already has, but it’s exactly what his character needs to figure out this astrophage problem. The movie makes it clear early on that Grace is seriously strapped for cash and couldn’t afford to move his research forward on his own. Without Carl stepping up, Grace wouldn’t have gotten involved with Project Hail Mary at all. And honestly, if the original doctor hadn’t unexpectedly passed away, Grace wouldn’t have been in the right place, knowing enough, to fill that spot and, you know, save humanity. So, a big shout-out to Carl – he’s a key player here.

Why Carl Was Created for the ‘Project Hail Mary’ Movie

Carl isn’t the first character adapted from a book to film, and he won’t be the last. These changes often happen because books and movies are different ways of telling a story. In the original book, the story is told from the character Grace’s point of view, letting readers directly experience his thoughts. This is particularly helpful when he’s doing research, as we get to follow his thinking process closely.

As a huge fan of Project Hail Mary, I was really glad they didn’t rely heavily on narration. Instead, they showed us what Grace was thinking through video diaries and flashbacks, but mostly just through really well-written dialogue. Especially during the science-y parts, the conversations with Carl were fantastic. Carl became this unexpected friend and someone for Gosling’s character to bounce ideas off of – a real connection in what was otherwise a very isolated situation. Honestly, the plot would have moved forward even without Carl being constantly present, but he was absolutely key to making the movie work as a live-action adaptation. He really brought something special to it.
