‘Scream 8’ Being Written by ‘Poker Face’ Showrunners

The next Scream movie, currently titled Scream 8, is heading in a fresh direction with a new writing team. While the firing of Scream VI star Melissa Barrera due to her pro-Palestine views caused some controversy, Scream 7 still performed well at the box office, earning $118 million domestically – making it the most successful film in the series (without adjusting for inflation). However, Scream 7 received the lowest critic score of any Scream movie on Rotten Tomatoes (31%), indicating that a change in creative approach was needed.

According to Deadline, Lilla and Nora Zuckerman will be writing the script for the next Scream movie, Scream 8. The sisters recently ran the popular Peacock series Poker Face, which was unfortunately canceled after two seasons. They’ve also written for several other TV shows, including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fringe, and Suits. Interestingly, this new role is somewhat meta: in the 2022 Scream film, a character directed a fictional movie within the Scream universe (Stab 8)—and that character was none other than Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, who faced criticism from some fans. Hopefully, the Zuckermans’ experience will be a positive one this time around.

There’s currently no confirmed release date for Scream 8. Kevin Williamson, who directed Scream 7, won’t be returning to direct the next installment. It’s also unknown whether any of the original actors, including Neve Campbell (who earned $7 million for Scream 7), will be back. The decision to hire the Zuckerman sisters to write the script for Scream 8 makes the future of the film a bit uncertain, especially considering Neve Campbell previously shared an idea for the story that Kevin Williamson liked. It’s unclear whether the Zuckerman sisters will be developing Campbell’s idea or starting fresh with a new one.

The latest installment, Scream 7, debuted on February 27, 2026, earning a franchise-record $63 million in its opening weekend and surpassing $200 million globally. However, a CinemaScore of B—the lowest ever for a Scream film, shared with Scream 4—signaled the need for a fresh approach. The series had become overly reliant on its own complex history and predictable tropes, ironically mirroring the very clichés that the original 1996 Scream cleverly poked fun at.

The next Scream movie, likely titled Scream 8, faces significant challenges. Scream 7 received a poor reception, and the loss of stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega – who played the Carpenter sisters – has created a major gap in the series. Although many hoped the storyline involving the Zuckerman sisters could be reintroduced, reports suggest that Paramount, Skydance, and Spyglass Media have a list of actors they won’t work with if those actors have publicly supported Palestine. This means that plotline will not be continued in future Scream films.
