Capcom cancels a presentation on Monster Hunter Wilds performance at CEDEC 2025 amid ongoing developer harassment

At this year’s Computer Entertainment Developers Conference in Japan, which is similar to GDC, Capcom has decided to cancel a presentation on improving performance and optimization for Monster Hunter Wilds that was scheduled for later this month. The reason behind this cancellation remains unclear, but it follows a wave of criticism about the game’s performance problems and the developers of Monster Hunter Wilds facing harassment as a result.

The CEDEC website’s machine translation suggests that the lecture, named “Ensuring Smooth Operation of ‘Monster Hunter Wilds’: Insights into Performance Adjustments,” was meant to discuss Capcom’s efforts to balance game performance while showcasing its unique selling points. Particular focus would be given to managing GPU load, CPU load, and memory efficiency.

Capcom hasn’t given a clear explanation for cancelling the talk, but there are good reasons to guess: Most recent reviews of Wilds have been negative, mainly due to performance issues that haven’t been resolved despite texture streaming fixes in the latest update. Even though Capcom claims they’re working on improving performance, it wouldn’t be surprising if a discussion about making Monster Hunter run smoothly could attract criticism from players who claim it doesn’t run well already.

It’s clear that Capcom developers have faced unwarranted abuse from players who, instead of addressing their legitimate concerns about the game’s performance problems, chose to lash out with unjustified harassment. Recently, Capcom released a statement on its Japanese help site stating they’ve found cases of defamation, character assassination, bullying, threats against their executives and employees, either by name or in a way that identifies specific individuals.

Capcom has stated that it may reach out to law enforcement or legal representatives and take appropriate legal steps when dealing with severe cases of customer harassment. This type of behavior can encompass defamation, abusive language, threats of violence, violations of employee privacy, and other forms of hostile actions that are both pointless and indefensible. It’s important to note that if someone is causing distress to any developer, they are likely also causing problems for someone who has no control over the business practices that are the source of their complaints.

As I write this, it appears that the other discussions related to Monster Hunter Wilds on the CEDEC schedule are still scheduled to proceed.
