Canon Events: Zatanna Sacrificed Everything in the Face of DC’s Greatest Evil

Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, and Rick Veitch reimagined DC’s Swamp Thing in a groundbreaking way. Their run explored the hero’s connection to the natural world, blurring the lines between science and the supernatural. Moore’s take on Swamp Thing wasn’t just a change for the character; it also introduced popular figures like John Constantine.

Constantine played a key role in getting Swamp Thing ready for a major fight against the biggest villain in the DC Universe. The Saga of the Swamp Thing comic isn’t just famous for its fresh take on Alec Holland and the creature known as Swamp Thing; it also established the origin of ultimate evil in DC, called The Great Darkness. This evil would have a huge effect on other magical heroes connected to Swamp Thing, including Zatara, a young woman continuing her father’s legacy.

Swamp Thing and Constantine Gathered DC’s Sorcerers for a Dark Ritual

Many magicians rely on rituals or special objects to perform magic, but Zatanna is different. She comes from a family—called homo magi—born with natural magical abilities. This makes her more powerful than most magicians, just like her father, and means she’s often the first one called when something magically disastrous happens.

Giovanni Zatara, known as “John,” was a stage magician with genuine magical abilities who first appeared in DC Comics during its Golden Age. He fought alongside the heroes of the All-Star Squadron and became well-known in both the superhero and magical communities. Interestingly, the romantic connection between John Constantine and Zatanna goes way back, and Zatara had a complex history with Zatanna’s father.

Despite the conflict, there was a strong sense of respect among those involved. Zatara and Zatanna were among the first magical heroes recruited before Swamp Thing launched his attack on The Great Darkness in the spirit world. While the planning began before this, the actual conflict started in Swamp Thing #50, a landmark issue created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and Rick Veitch, with art by John Totleben, Tom Mandrake, Tatjana Wood, and John Costanza.

Constantine, Zatara, Zatanna, Sargon the Sorcerer, Doctor Occult, and Baron Winters came together and held a séance. They channeled their magical powers through Steve Dayton, also known as Mento from the Doom Patrol. Using his special psychic helmet, Mento reached out into the afterlife, seeking allies like Deadman, Etrigan, Doctor Fate, the Phantom Stranger, a group of demons, and ultimately, the Spectre.

The event was huge and impactful, condensed into a single, dramatic story. Though John Constantine clearly warned the gathered magicians about the dire consequences of failure, they didn’t fully grasp the extent of the evil they were up against – not until it directly threatened them.

Zatara Sacrificed His Life to The Great Darkness to Save His Daughter

While searching the afterlife, Mento encountered a powerful energy that overwhelmed Etrigan and his demons. This energy quickly noticed Mento and the other sorcerers present, and they began to suffer disastrous effects in the real world as it tried to disrupt their connection. When they resisted, the energy started searching for any vulnerability within the group.

Sargon the Sorcerer was the first to succumb to the flames. As he burned and lost control, Zatara urged him to remember their shared profession and stop frightening their daughter. Sargon died in the fire, still holding on and keeping the magical ritual going. The sight was terrifying for everyone present, but it wasn’t over yet.

The overwhelming force continued to search for a way to break through, and Mento’s fearful alerts only made things worse. Just as Zatanna began to notice a growing heat, her father, Giovanni Zatara, understood what was happening: she was about to be the next victim, but he refused to accept it.

Zatara angrily confronted The Great Darkness, determined to protect his daughter. He wouldn’t let DC’s most powerful villain harm her, so he used his unique magic – spells cast backward – to force The Great Darkness to target him instead. With just four reversed words, Zatara shielded his daughter from the terrible destiny he’d always worried about.

She was helpless to save him as he burned to death before her, and she was forced to hold his hand – a hand that was bursting with energy – to maintain the magical circle. The experience was deeply traumatic, shattering Zatanna’s sense of reality. Driven by his sacrifice, she persevered, and together they kept the circle unbroken long enough to complete the ritual.

Ultimately, Sargon and Zatara died, and Mento suffered lasting mental trauma from using his psychic helmet and witnessing the terrors of the Spirit World. Zatanna was left to cope with these losses on her own, feeling that the man she loved was responsible for her father’s death, all while still trying to navigate a world that was new to her.

Zatanna Overcame Tragedy to Become DC’s Most Powerful Magic-User

Zatanna was deeply affected by this event, and it continued to impact her relationship with Constantine. However, it also pushed her to explore the worlds of magic and superheroics even further. She eventually joined the Justice League of America, though during a difficult period for the team, and later worked alongside John Constantine again.

Zatanna continues the magical tradition started by her father, but she’s become an even more powerful magic user in the DC Universe. While others might have greater mystical strength, Zatanna’s special ability to cast spells by speaking backwards—a skill she learned from her father—gives her incredible potential and makes her a key player in any magical story.

Zatanna consistently steps up to help heroes and defend the world, whether she’s teaming up with groups like the Seven Soldiers of Victory or the Sentinels of Magic. Though she’s witnessed devastating outcomes, her father Zatara’s ultimate sacrifice instilled in her a resilience that surpasses even her already impressive magical powers.
