Can Star Wars survive without a Skywalker storyline? We may find out

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating galaxies far, far away, I must say I’m intrigued by the prospect of a Skywalker-less Star Wars trilogy. It’s like playing a new expansion pack without the old character you’ve grown attached to, but with the promise of fresh challenges and unexplored territories.

Daisy Ridley initially stepped onto the Star Wars set to portray the next generation of a Skywalker character. While some fans embraced her enigmatic role as Rey, others expressed dissatisfaction with the scripted dialogue. However, there might be a future for the franchise that does not revolve around the Skywalkers.

Earlier this week, it was made public that a fresh trilogy series is set for release on the silver screen. This upcoming series will be penned and helmed by Simon Kinberg, and while it’s uncertain, there could potentially be a Skywalker saga in the mix.

There were whispers, perhaps even some gossip, suggesting that the upcoming trilogy might conclude the Skywalker story permanently. It is confirmed that the last movie in this series concluded with an enigmatic twist about offspring who may possess Jedi abilities. However, this aspect hasn’t been explored further since there has been no new Star Wars film released after Episode 9.

Discussions about upcoming Star Wars projects include the possibility of Donald Glover reprising his role as Lando Calrission, along with three other proposed standalone films from different writers. A potential trilogy is also being considered, though its development remains uncertain. Additionally, a possible standalone film focusing on Rey could be under development too.

Some of that speculation has been debunked, and this new series may go in a different direction entirely.

The upcoming Star Wars and Disney production will explore if they can successfully create an extensive universe devoid of Skywalkers, particularly in a new trilogy. Although there is a wealth of written material to reference, the recurring theme of Darth Vader or a Sith lord as a threat has been consistent across almost all texts and films. The Skywalker timeline aligns with the overall narrative. For instance, in Rogue One, we learn that Princess Leia was involved off-screen, then part of the story in the ending. Similarly, Solo provided the backstory for Han Solo. In the final trilogy, they concluded the Leia narrative, somewhat closed the Luke Skywalker narrative, but expanded the Rey arc.

In a galaxy devoid of Skywalkers, creating a new Star Wars saga could pose a challenge due to the intricate connections between the stories so far. Fans accepted the latest trilogy as it provided satisfying conclusions for characters like Han, Leia, and Luke, but Rian Johnson’s Episode 8 left some feeling less engaged. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that this is a Star Wars/Skywalker saga.

Who is going to be the next leader of the Jedi? Is it possible for a Star Wars film to exist without the presence of the Jedi? How deep into the future of Star Wars would one have to delve to produce an entirely fresh series, devoid of Skywalker influence, yet not following a similar narrative trajectory to the originals?

It seems that there’s no consensus on the potential plot of this show, and I can’t help but wonder if its appeal may diminish without a Skywalker character in space. However, some viewers might find themselves relieved by this shift in focus.
