“Can it ever be topped?” Paapa Essiedu reflects on working with legend Bryan Cranston in new show

Paapa Essiedu, known for his role in The Capture, has spoken about performing with Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad. They both starred in a recent stage production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, which recently finished its run at Wyndham’s Theatre in London.

Actor Weruche Opia, who starred in the acclaimed series I May Destroy You, recently shared on the Dish from Waitrose podcast that he’s a big fan of Bryan Cranston’s sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. He discussed his love for the show with podcast hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett.

Essiedu felt the strength of the play All My Sons really came down to the actors, especially Bryan Cranston, whom he admired since seeing him in Malcolm in the Middle when he was growing up.

Is anything going to be better than that? Actually, they’ve revived the show, so we’ll see,” he said, mentioning its current availability on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US.

He described working with his co-star in All My Sons as a dream come true, saying it was amazing to be part of such a great cast.

Directed by Ivo Van Hove, this adaptation of Arthur Miller’s 1946 play features Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Hayley Squire. The story centers on Joe Keller, a successful businessman who made money during World War II, but whose life falls apart when his partner faces legal trouble for faulty products and his son Larry disappears while serving in the war.

After the war, it turns out Joe was involved in a lot more than we knew, and he’s now being held accountable for everything he did. It’s tough to see, but he has to deal with the fallout of his choices.

Weruche Essiedu will appear in the Channel 4 series Falling with Keeley Hawes. They play David, a priest, and Anna, a nun, who find themselves falling in love, challenging their religious vows. The show is a heartwarming and honest romantic drama.

Written by Adolescence writer Jack Thorne, the series has a “great” premise, according to Essiedu.

I went to church regularly until I was around 16 or 17, so I have a good understanding of Christianity and church culture, especially in the UK. I also spent a lot of time with Father Jarell, who leads a lovely church in Cardiff – that’s actually where we filmed.

What I really admired about him was how he completely challenged the traditional image of a priest – how they’re expected to act and appear. I always pictured priests as being very stern, but he was attractive and brought a different energy to the role. He just made it… appealing.
