Ella Bruccoleri, known for her role in Call the Midwife, has finally explained why she left the BBC series in 2022. Her character, Sister Frances, was written out of the show with the storyline that she moved to Chichester to recover from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident.
Bruccoleri explained to Radio Times that leaving her first major TV role felt strange, but she’d begun receiving other job offers and discovered she enjoys working on a range of projects.
Looking back on her first appearances in the show, the actor admitted her early performances weren’t her best. She explained that she learned how to act for the screen while working on the series, and that experience was incredibly helpful.

I’m so excited! Kaya Bruccoleri is going to be the lead in a new BBC period drama called The Other Bennet Sister, and it’s coming out on Sunday, March 15th! It’s based on the really popular novel by Janice Hadlow, and the show will focus on Mary Bennet – you know, the middle sister from Pride and Prejudice who always seemed a bit quiet and unnoticed. Apparently, this series really explores her story!
The show is built on the idea that while many people wish they were like the witty and independent Elizabeth Bennet, most of us are probably more similar to her less glamorous sister, Mary.
The story centers on Mary, who is determined to discover who she is and what she wants in life, emerging from the influence of her sisters. This journey leads her into a sweeping romance, taking her from the familiar surroundings of her family home in Meryton to the glamorous parties of London and the beautiful landscapes of the Lake District, all as she strives for independence, self-acceptance, and a fresh start.

Actress Patsy Ferran, known for her role as Winifred Barragan in season three of Netflix’s Bridgerton, discussed the similarities and differences between herself and her character Mary in an interview with Radio Times. She believes she’s more self-assured than Mary, but acknowledges Mary’s youth. Ferran admires Mary’s hardworking nature, noting that they both prefer to learn and improve through effort and study rather than relying on natural talent.
Mary finds comfort in daily piano practice, while I feel most comfortable when I’m meticulously crafting detailed notes about a character. That’s what helps me relax and focus.

Joining the cast of Bruccoleri’s ‘Mary’ are Richard E. Grant and Ruth Jones (known from ‘Gavin & Stacey’) as Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Indira Varma will play Mrs. Gardiner, with Richard Coyle as Mr. Gardiner. Laurie Davidson, from ‘A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story’, and Dónal Finn, of ‘SAS Rogue Heroes’, will portray potential husbands, Mr. Ryder and Mr. Hayward, respectively.
The Other Bennet Sister debuts on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday 15 March 2026.
