Fans of the BBC show Call the Midwife are discussing whether Matthew, played by Olly Rix, might be replaced after Trixie (Helen George) revealed problems in their marriage.
In the most recent episode of the nursing drama, the popular character revealed her marriage was struggling to her friend and coworker, Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett). She admitted, “Things aren’t going well in my marriage right now,” after Phyllis noticed something was off.
She softly asked if they were spending too much time apart, and Trixie admitted they weren’t getting enough quality time together, explaining he focused on his work and she on hers. After seeing the show, many viewers took to Instagram, suggesting that the character of Matthew be recast, even though they enjoyed him.

Let’s find someone to take his place. It won’t be a simple change, but it’s better than just having the character disappear forever and ending the story. I really loved Matthew.
One viewer suggested letting the actress enjoy her relationship privately and focusing the show on her character’s career and interactions with another character, Jonty. They also proposed a storyline where she becomes pregnant or, as a last resort, the actor playing her partner is replaced, though they admitted they wouldn’t be thrilled with that option.

Before the new season of the show begins, George discussed Matthew and Trixie’s relationship with the Express.co.uk and other reporters. He explained that marriages can work in many different ways, appearing unusual to others but still being successful for the couple involved.
“I think it gives us space that she can come back to Nonnatus and do what she wants.”
She explained that the character leads a dual existence – as a wife and Lady Aylward, but also by returning to her true passions and family, specifically practicing midwifery. She finds this balance incredibly fulfilling.

The most recent episode hints that Trixie is feeling dissatisfied with her life in Poplar. While talking to Phyllis, she expressed concerns about the future of Nonnatus House – and what it might mean for everyone if Sister Julienne decides to close it – suggesting she fears the work there won’t be enough to sustain her long-term.
Look, it still stings talking about leaving that period drama. It’s tough, honestly. Rix – you might recognize him now from Casualty – shared how upset he was when he left back in 2024. He told HELLO! magazine it’s just a hard subject for him to open up about.

I feel lucky to have had many jobs I remember with fondness. While you naturally leave those experiences behind and focus on new opportunities, you continue to grow and create new work.
He explained that he was unhappy with how that project concluded, feeling he wasn’t treated with the respect he deserved. He prefers to leave it behind him and doesn’t want to talk about it further.
A representative for the show responded, stating that the claims are untrue. Call the Midwife strives to create a positive and welcoming work environment, and is well-known for its close-knit, family-like set.
Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
