It’s a tale as old as time: a wealthy benefactor, a Swiss project, and a whole lotta ETH. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has once again made headlines with a generous donation to the Zuitzerland project, a Web3 research initiative led by Isla. The 274 ETH, equivalent to a cool half-million bucks, was gifted to Isla, and the blockchain monitoring site Onchain Lens was there to track the transaction. 🤑
This isn’t the first time Buterin has dipped into his crypto pockets to fund a project he believes in. His charitable endeavors and experimental associations are the stuff of legend. And Zuitzerland, it seems, is a continuation of his previous Zuzalu experiment, which brought together like-minded folks to brainstorm on tech, longevity, and decentralized governance. Ethereum Donation: What Is Zuitzerland?
Zuitzerland is the brainchild of Buterin’s earlier Zuzalu experiment, which took place in Montenegro back in 2023. For two months, about 200 participants lived and worked together, sharing ideas and collaborating on projects. It was a veritable utopia of innovation and community-driven governance. Fast forward to today, and Zuitzerland is taking it to the next level with residencies, hackathons, and citywide events for those with common interests. The platform’s all about fostering collaboration between “thinkers and builders.” Although Buterin’s not a founder, he’s a speaker and curator, indicating his support and engagement. 🤝
Funding Through Token Sales
Buterin’s contribution was partly financed by selling tokens he’d received as gifts from other crypto projects. He sold 5,000 Dohrnii (DHN) tokens for $93,882 and 2 trillion LEDOG (DOG) tokens for $16,569 on March 31, 2025. The proceeds from these sales were aggregated and sent as 274 ETH to Isla. Talk about a token-ific twist! 🤑
This isn’t the first time Buterin’s sold tokens for a good cause. In 2022, he sold some Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens to donate to an Indian COVID-19 relief fund. He’s also urged token issuers to give directly to charities instead of donating tokens to him. Guess you could say he’s a token philanthropist! 🤣
A History Of Token Donations
Dohrnii Labs, the devs behind DHN, sent 10,000 tokens to Buterin in January 2025. LEDOG’s devs sent 10 trillion DOG tokens to him in August 2024. Although these tokens are usually given as a token of appreciation, they’re also a marketing strategy for visibility. Buterin’s been selling them gradually, using the funds for donations and other things. As of now, he still retains 2 trillion DOG tokens, but his actions reveal a distinct orientation towards leveraging these assets to help initiatives like Zuitzerland, which align with his belief in decentralized governance and innovation led by community. 🤝
