Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who stars in the upcoming Hulu series that continues the story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has shared a first look at her character and spoken about the surprising decision to cancel the show.
A continuation of the popular show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was in development. Sarah Michelle Gellar was set to return as the original Buffy, and actress Chloe Armstrong was cast as a new Slayer named Nova. Chloe Zhao directed the pilot episode, written by Lilla and Nora Zuckerman. Despite high expectations for the series, Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on Instagram on March 14th that Hulu had decided not to proceed with the show. She was also an executive producer on the project.
I was so excited to see the first look at Emma Armstrong as the new Slayer on her Instagram! It’s a stunning photo – her outfit, necklace, and even her hair really capture the spirit of Buffy from the original series. She simply captioned it with a black heart and “your slayer,” which gave me chills! She also shared some thoughts about the show’s cancellation on her Instagram stories. I’ve included the picture and her comments below for anyone else who wants to see!

I know many of you have likely heard, but I wanted to express my gratitude for all your support of me and the show. These past few months have been truly special, and I’m really proud of what we accomplished. While I’m disappointed you won’t get to see more, it doesn’t diminish the incredible experience I had. I want to thank Sarah, the Zuckerman sisters, and Chloe – I love you all. And a huge thank you to all the fans and everyone who believed in this new direction and in me. Thank you also to the amazing cast I worked with. We brought this back for you, and Buffy means so much to all of us – it’s a part of our lives and will continue to be, so who knows what the future holds.
The image Armstrong shared received a lot of positive feedback in the comments. Sarah Gellar responded with four heart emojis, and Sarah Bock wrote messages of love and pride, saying “I love you sm Ryan” and “so proud of you.” Ravi Cabot-Conyers, a co-star from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, also showed support with red and black hearts, simply writing “Always.”
Although previous attempts to revive Buffy the Vampire Slayer had been considered, this effort gained significant traction thanks to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s participation, a complete cast, and a pilot episode directed by Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao. In 2025, videos surfaced online showing Gellar surprising Emma Caulfield Ford with the news and the two actresses training, quickly going viral. Given these promising developments and the show’s continued fanbase, many viewers have expressed shock and disappointment when the project ultimately stalled, sharing their reactions widely on social media.
Disney now owns the rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer after acquiring 20th Century Fox, which means any continuation of the series can’t be offered to other streaming platforms. While Hulu canceled the planned New Sunnydale series, Deadline reports they are still interested in revisiting the Buffy universe in a different format, though no plans are confirmed yet.
The cast of the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel also features Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Daniel Di Tomasso, Jack Cutmore-Scott, Kingston Vernes, Chase Sui Wonders, and Merrin Dungey, alongside Armstrong, Gellar, and Bock. Armstrong is also set to return as Francis in season 2 of the popular FX series The Lowdown, which stars Ethan Hawke.
