Bruce Springsteen’s anti-ICE protest song decries Minneapolis killings and ‘King Trump’

Bruce Springsteen has released a new song criticizing former President Trump and the actions of immigration officers in Minnesota, whom he calls “federal thugs.” The song is a protest against what he sees as harmful policies and violence.

Bruce Springsteen shared his new song, “Streets of Minneapolis,” explaining he wrote it on Saturday, recorded it Sunday, and released it today as a reaction to the violence happening in Minneapolis. He dedicated the song to the people of Minneapolis, especially its immigrant communities, and in remembrance of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Following the fatal shooting of ICU nurse and U.S. citizen Alex Pretti by federal agents, celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo and Pedro Pascal have publicly criticized ICE.

On January 7th, a 37-year-old mother of three was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer during an immigration raid. Later, on January 24th, Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse who worked at a VA hospital and had previously protested both President Trump’s immigration policies and the first shooting, was also shot and killed by ICE agents.

Bruce Springsteen’s new song honors the two Minnesotans killed, and tells the story of the immigration enforcement and resulting protests in their community. The song sharply criticizes Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem for their responses to the killings, which were proven false by witnesses and video evidence.

In the song, Springsteen sings in his signature gravelly voice, recounting a claim of self-defense while urging listeners not to trust what they see. He emphasizes the reality of lived experience – ‘our blood and bones’ – pitted against what he calls the dishonest claims of Miller and Noem, symbolized by ‘whistles and phones’.

Immediately following the shootings, both Miller and Noem defended the actions taken. Miller labeled Pretti as someone who intended to carry out an assassination, while Noem described Good’s actions as domestic terrorism. However, videos later emerged that challenged their initial claims.

In his latest song, Springsteen, a well-known critic of President Trump, also criticizes immigration officials, accusing them of racism and hypocrisy – claiming they justify their actions by upholding the law while simultaneously violating people’s rights.

According to White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson, the Trump administration wants state and local Democrats to collaborate with federal law enforcement to remove dangerous, undocumented criminals from their communities. Jackson stated this was the administration’s focus, dismissing what she described as unrelated songs containing false or inaccurate information.

Several well-known celebrities, such as Olivia Rodrigo, Pedro Pascal, Billie Eilish, and Hannah Einbinder, have publicly criticized ICE and the increased immigration enforcement in Minneapolis.
